i drive my ford e350 RV about 400ml by 70mph with many hills. Then we sleep and drive again for 200ml. Then I see in the mirror that there is a smoke cloud. I stop and go under. Oil pan and at the starter are oily with red atf fluid. What can I filled 0,4 gal and check the dipstick at the cold space is oily and the hot space nothing.
Looks like it may be the transmission front shaft seal. You can pull the bolts out of the inspection cover and see if it's slobbering off the converter.
Seal is cheap but it requires transmission removal to access
Hi
is the inspection cover the cover with the hose in front of the oil pan? The pic with the red circle and the arrow. My problem is that I’m in France with family for vacation. And there is no seal and no mechanic who can help me. Is it possible to drive back and check the fluid level in short intervals. The transmission works well.
As long as you check it regularly and don't let it run low you'll be fine. The leak probably isn't horrible it's just with all the miles of traveling it adds up quick.
It is possible that only by overheating loses oil. Can I see the vent anyway?
it is hard to see the vent...... it's just behind the Bell housing area and behind where the Pump is located .. Note the dark area on top of the Transmission you may need to Zoom in to see it.
Hi
i open the inspection cover and big starter pinion is completely dry. The top of the tranny is also dry.
Maybe The two tubes under the starter can be broken but I can’t see a crack on it.
Any ideas
my next step would be to get some cleaner like Engine De-Greaser and get rid of as much mess as possible, wipe the lines clean, then make sure it was full of fluid then fire it up and see IF I could discover an exact location of any leaks.
Today I check again about oil leaks. It is only a little wet but no drops. But the fluid level is too low. Can I fill the fluid in a cold condition to a reasonable level?
if so, how should I do it?
Hello
I'm back home. I drove back with 50 - 60 mph and had no oil loss. first
I had to refill 2 liters.
What should I do now? Rinse gear or just keep driving?
retrofit an additional radiator and a temperature gauge?
