2011 with 3.7 battery symbol came on, I made it to destination with almost no steering by the end. Could not charge battery until disconnected the ground lead. Could not reconnect ground lead because of heavy current draw till I removed the output wire from the alternator. Seems like an unusual way to fail? My control wire plug is on the side of the alternator and the replacement ones seem to be on the back. Is this an issue? How do I pull that connector? Why is this such an expensive model (802CAD)!
Rob
I have seen alternators with the rear plug, and with a 90 degree plug so it points up at top.. As long as it has the same pin connection, it should be fine. Cost of alternators depends on where you purchase them, if it is used, rebuilt or new.
But if it is an angle plug I would have to pull the plug of ''backwards'' rather than ''sideways''? How is the plug released?
The ebay listings say an alternator that fits an xlt will not fit an xl? I have AC and cruise and cd player, does that make mine an xlt by default?
Feel free to recommend an inexpensive place to buy one for this truck.
Rob
The parts listing on TASCA shows only one alternator no matter the trim level.
But all the ebay listings say it fits XLT but not XL.
Non Ebay listings talk about heated seats and 110volt converter, and that is what my local suppliers ask.At least the ebay (and your) listing show the plug on the side like on my truck, rather than the rear like Rock auto; https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...generator,2412
The ONLY way to settle this is to go the dealer and ask the parts guy based on your VIN.
TASCA deals ONLY in OE Motorcraft parts with Ford part numbers and packaged in Ford's packaging.
I'm not so sure that the 3.7L was available in an XLT with the 302a package which would give you options for heated seats and other power demands. If we were talking about a 5.0L or 3.5L then there are likely a couple alternators available as these engines were available throughout Ford's trim levels.
I'm only throwing pasta at the wall to see what sticks, I could be woefully wrong.
Yes, those are on my watch list. The first link says it is compatible with either xl or xlt, the second is only for the xlt. The prices are better than I can get locally but as I am in Canada it would be a real hassle to send it back in case of problem. The cheaper seller is brand new to ebay and suspiciously under priced. My core is likely not worth rebuilding because it smelled really bad when I reached my destination. This means I do not really mind trading it in.

Thanks Tim, I had not heard of Tasca before. When I phoned my dealer he did not ask for vin and he was surprised by the 802$ price. It was not stock at dealer.
