What year is your truck? Are you going from a 2G to a 3G ALT.

The newer voltage regulators (VR) found on the newer ALT (2G or 3G) need to have all 3 inputs to make it work.

The white wire circles back and clips onto the spade on the alternator and has nothing to do with the rest of the harness.

My conversion harness was purchased locally, but they are available on eBay for $12-15. Summit Racing wants a fortune for theirs, but that is an option too.

Close-up of the white wire and the connection to alternator.

A direct connection is more than adequate as well. Funny thing... you won't find a commercially available 3G to 6G conversion connector.

What alternator did you install then? All 3G alternators use the white wire. You didn't install a 4G did you?
