Lol. I'm glad I'm the first guy you think of when it comes to broken drivetrains.

Ok so a wrench in the whole conversation here. My mechanic told me today it's the transmission. The T-case appears fine. So my question today is, who have you all bought a transmission from? It's my tractor/wood/hay/horse hauler, I don't put any serious strain on it. The local rebuild shop (Shift Shop, Perry MI) says $2100 for a standard rebuild. That seems about standard.
I bought mine from BTS but I drive like a maniac and plan to own this truck until I die. If your local transmission shop has a good reputation, that may be all you need.
I don't plan on owning this particular truck for a whole lot longer, it's rusty and has almost 350,000 miles on it. When I can afford to, I'll be flying down south and dropping a good amount on a truck that'll last me longer.
I'm thinking I'll just find the best price local shop and have them do a standard rebuild. I'll get upgrades done on my next truck....
A transfer case can easily be rebuilt. Most of the time can be done by someone with very little knowledge of them as long as they have some mechanical knowledge. I worked with a kid who pulled his Dmax into the shop at work, 12 hours later when I came back in I helped him reinstall it. He'd never touched one before but with good guidance from the internet said it was really easy.
As far as a builder goes the 4r100 has been around for awhile. It's simple compared to the newer transmissions. I found a local builder within 5 miles from me who rebuilt my trans for a great deal with a transgo kit and some other goodies. I never had a problem with it aside from a bad torque converter right out of the box. He is no longer around... rip.
