Hi everyone. I have a 2002 F250SD 4x4 with 177,000mi and an automatic trans problem. I don't drive it much, just to plow a couple of 500' driveways in winter and tow a trailer 5-6 times a year. I've been having trans issues for some time now, and the noises are getting worse. I had it to the dealer 2 years ago for shifting problems, and before they even looked at it, they told me they could drive me home and pick me up tomorrow after they installed a rebuilt from ford. I left, no,I ran out of there as fast as I could. My question is this. Does anybody know of a good , trustworthy trans shop where I can get an honest appraisal of my trans? I'm assuming I'm gonna need a rebuild job. I would like to get a good rebuild, not some alley mechanic job that will last a year or so. For what I use the truck for and my age, (I'll be 59 later this year), I'm hoping this truck will be the last one I have to buy. Not that I'm planning on leaving earth anytime soon, but a new trans is certainly cheaper than a new truck! I'd like to retire in 18 months debt free. Yeah, I know, I'm a dreamer! I live 35 miles south of Chicago, Il, in the south suburbs. Anybody have any suggestions on good shops to go to around here?
Thanks for the speedy reply. I called and booked an appointment for Friday at 9am. I'll let you know how it goes and what they say. Thanks again. By the way, I looked up his address and directions on google and saw a BBB rating site with his business listed. He gets high marks from them, so thats a real plus.
I just got back from AACCEL Emissions and Lube. It was a lose shifter linkage bracket on the steering column. $65.00! The truck stays in park now and no more noise when driving. I had a chance to talk to Craig and tell him about my experience at the dealer. What a nice guy, and the honest service/evaluation was refreshing. I'm going to tell everyone I know about his shop. Even though he's probably 35miles from me, I'm going to go back there for any service needs. Thankyou again Mark, for the referral, and I know Craig appreciates it also.
I have manual locking hubs and a floor shift for 2wd,4wd,4wd low, with dash indicator lights. I did a search and found a post on how to check if bulbs are out or switch on transfer case is defective. I performed test by unplugging and grounding plug terminals one at a time to frame and each light goes on when I do this. I ordered a new transfer case switch from ford figuring this will solve the problem of no indicator lights. I read in the owners manual that the lights will illuminate momentarily (with the rest of dash indicators) upon startup. This doesn't happen either. Hope I'm not spending 51.00 dollars on nothing, but we'll see on Tuesday. My question is --how does this switch activate? I understand when the switch activates it merely grounds to complete the circuit and light the bulb indicator on the dash. Are there pins on the inner end of the switch that are pushed in or out by a detent in the inner shifting linkage, and if so, does the switch have to screw in at a certian position to contact this linkage. Another question ---am I overthinking this!!!
