getting my trans rebuilt

hey guys. i am planning on having my truck taken to a trans shop to have it rebuilt. they are going to install a new converter, towing shift kit, and of course rebuilding the trans itself, this whole thing including reinstalling it into my truck will cost me between 1300 and 1500$. is that a fair price? i mean it seems like it will cost you around 1300$ to get an AOD trans rebuilt anyways right? I am a little worried that i am paying too much. and i am really tired of working on my truck right now (its been 4 months since i have driven it! i just got done putting in a new motor) what do ya guys think?

getting my trans rebuilt

I've had my tranny rebuilt twice on my 1991 F250 diesel. The first time it cost $2300 from AMOCO. 14 Months later, when it went again I learned about the AMOCO 12 month warranty. I'll spare you the details of rage and anger, and simply say that I only paid for parts for the second rebuild, which still came to $1200. If you can get it done for $1500, I'd say your doing pretty good. I don't know what trans you have, but I'd spend the time to go to every trans shop around and talk to anyone trans mechanic that will listen. You'll start to learn the history of your trans and whether or not it is up to the task. Some trans perform better than other's for hauling, some better for highway use, some better for off-roading. By talking to the trans mechanics, you'll learn which trans is the best option for you and your budget. I've learned this the hard way... I'll probably have to put another trans in my truck at some point... The other thing that you'll learn along the way is which trans mechanics in you're area are well respected. You don't want just anyone when your spening that kind of money. One last thing, just because someone is good at fixing car transmissions, doesn't mean that they are good at fixing truck trannies.

Good luck,

bart

If it helps, the Aamco in my area just quoted me $1680 to rebuild a tranny that has "normal wear and tear". Granted, it is 137K miles of "normal wear and tear", but nothing noticably wrong. It's showing up as a wrong gear ratio, so I took it in. This shop and the one who refered me (yes, I took my truck in and he actually told me somewhere I could get it checked out BETTER for FREE, he would have charged $70) both have my confidence.

yes, as you have put it, my trans (AOD) is prbably considered to be more of a daily driver kind of trans. I was told my the local mustang shop by my house that if i just install a nice shift kit, and put a huge tranny cooler on it, that it should perform fine in all that i can throw out with my 351. i am also going to have him install a nice set of HD clutch packs.
