The screw on the side of the IP effects fuel delivery. People turn it up a few flats to "roll coal." This will cause your EGTs to go up too.
Where did you get your new IP? Do you know if it was set properly from the rebuilder?
I got the pump from a builder who sells on Ebay. All I know is the reviews were good and it would have been over twice as much to have it built in state.

I know exactly what you mean. They want $500 locally here just to reseal the darn thing. Any hard parts is extra.
From what I've read there isn't much to it. Some of the eBay rebuilders even take more steps than the very reputable local guys.
Unless you bought it from Conestoga or R&D IDI Performance the settings could be suspect. Once you adjust your timing if you're still getting black smoke and lousy fuel mileage then you could check the setting of the fuel screw on the IP. Don't change too many things at once or you could get "lost in the woods" so to speak.
for the folks that were interested in a DIY Luminosity Probe, I have just put one together on Multisim (this is Software I use to simulate electronic designs)
I will make a new Thread and post information and circuits so you folks can determine IF you want to build one, I'll probably get it done by the weekend or there about....
Thanks for the info, I will try to tweak the timing this weekend, if there is time, summer time up here in Alaska is real busy! time goes by too quick!
I worked at a ford truck dealership in the 90’s and like you said, there was always a mark, but I used a timing light and trigger pickup ( or what ever it is called) to set the timing.
Ill advance it (tip it to the drivers sit) a little and the see what my mileage looked like
To the drivers side would retard it. I suggest retarding if you see soot, if you get grey/white smoke / haze, would indicate too retarded.
I adjusted mine just by sound and what not. Mine turned out to be quite retarded, so I rolled it towards the passenger side bit by bit until I feel like it's pretty good now. It's a little loud when it's first started, but its summer so I'm scared to advance it any more or it may be ridiculous once winter comes. We will see.
You can definitely hone in the timing by just how it drives. My truck used to seem to shift late and hang in gear at higher rpm, now with the timing bumped it seems to shift just perfect. My exhaust pipe is kinda black sooty, but the truck seems to run perfect so I think I'll stick with where it is for now.
