6.9 pump timing

Where should the timing marks be set on the inj pump? Right now the mark on the pump is about 1/16" or so to the driver's side of the engine mark. Does this sound about right?

A couple months ago a local mechanic installed a reman pump. He said the pump timing "should be about right". But he admitted he seldom works on diesels, I went to him because the nearest diesel shop is 120+ miles away.

It's been running good, but seems to be lacking power, gets terrible mileage - about 3-4 mpg - and seems to be a lot of engine noise (diesel rattle) under accel (but I have no other Ford IDI to compare to). Takes double the fuel of my '73 F100 390-4v. It starts good, idles/runs smooth, no leaks and only a little black smoke under acceleration. Will I just have to live with the poor mileage? The first pump got about 10 mpg, but this one is way worse. Any ideas?

ya outa to be getting better milage then that. two things could have happend. first the pump gear is a 180 degreas out of time. ussually they run kinda rough when this happens but the milage is really abd. the timng marks are suppsoed to be lined up exactly if its to the drivers side that means its retarded. ussually if anything ya want them a little bit davanced or rite on. advance by twisting the pump towards the passengers side.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. I wouldn't think it's 180 off (but I've never experienced it either), because it runs very smooth at idle and driving. I'll adjust it some and see if it helps.

My guess would be he didn't time it roght.. If he admitted he doesn't work on Diesels often I would guess he doesn't have the right equipment to time it right.. As you may know there are two types of timing. Static which you can do yourself. And Dynamic timing. which requires special equipment. I would go a " REAL DIESEL MECHANIC" and have this done. On a guess you should get at the least 12 mpg depending on what you do with it..

On these trucks dynaymic timing wont do anything since the only way to adjust it is internally in the pump which has to be done at a pump repair place.

To static time a gas motor, put piston 1 at TDC, turn distributor till rotor contacts #1 terminal. Tighten distributor and start.

To dynamic time gas motor, install timing light and start motor, loosen and rotate distrubutor till correct timing mark is lined up with pointer on harmonic balancer.

Which do you think is closer to right?
