Hi, I replaced the injection pump on my 7.3 IDI, but didn't have the tool to set the timing. It runs good, but my mpg is only 15.5, it was 19 and 20 before and I notice some soot in the tail pipe, which was not there with the old injection pump. I want to turn the pump a little to see if my mpg will come back up, but don't know which way to go. Any recommendations? should I turn it towards the passenger side or the drivers side? Oh, and I replaced the injection pump over a year ago.
more soot sounds like its too advanced, i would rotate it to drivers side about 1/16" and see if it improves or gets worse.
yeah probably, from my experience advancing can give better fuel mileage and produce more pollutants .... retarding can cause lag and run a bit cleaner.. fine line there LOL
but I was just pointing what direction to move the pump for advancing ... the advise was use a timing meter it sure just takes the guess work out of it for me
I try'd finding some place that had one, but no one around here (Wasilla, AK) has one, everyone says they just mark the injection pump to the housing, but the new pump didn't have a mark on it.
BTW I think 2 degrees of timing movement is about 0.030 movement of the pump. ... I generally set mine between 4 and 5 degrees.
it is strange to not see a timing mark on the Pump, all replacement pumps I have messed with Had a mark, but it's been probably 20 years since I have changed one so I have no Idea if new ones are still marked today, I would assume all rebuilt pumps would have a mark.
I worked at a ford truck dealership in the 90’s and like you said, there was always a mark, but I used a timing light and trigger pickup ( or what ever it is called) to set the timing.
Ill advance it (tip it to the drivers sit) a little and the see what my mileage looked like
Try'd looking up, making my own, but didn't come up with anything.
the tricky thing is drilling out the old Glow Plug so you can install a Quartz Rod in it, and you need to put threads inside the top end of the GP so that you can screw in a Bushing to hold the Quartz Rod in place so it don't blow out and Poke an eye out. the electronics are pretty simple just a 4011 Quad Nand gate to be triggered by a Photo Diode/Transistor, and a 2N2222 NPN transistor to be driven by the NAND Gate thru a Wire Loop to trigger your Timing Light/Meter.

maybe I'll draw up a Schematic and post it Later.
That at would be nice, might help someone else too!
