Installed a canister fuel filter on the inner fender and occasionally when the fuel level in the tank goes below the level of the fuel filter it can cause a problem with the fuel supply.

For a first time firing after a cam install, I always fill the carb by either taking the top off and pouring it in (on an Autolite) or using a syringe (on a Holley) before I turn it over. That way I know the carb can run for a while so the pump has time to start working. I also I double check the distributor timing by turning it over by hand 2 complete revolutions while checking the #1 valves for opening.

After I broke in my new cam a couple of months ago using a 5 gallon gas can like the OP did, I connected the fuel hose to the new steel line that goes back to the tank. Problem was I hadn't connected the other end to the tank, D'oh! That cost me a couple of weeks of head scratching!
