Fuel issue

Still pluggin' along on my '83 Ranger and its Perkins 2.2l. I seem to be having a fuel issue. After putting the motor back in the truck, I was able to drive it several times. Even made it down to Statesville and back (30m RT) once. But would have to 'prime the pump' the first time I started it each day, using the hand pump on the fuel filter to clear the air from the fuel line. I changed out all the hose clamps that I'd touched in the teardown, but that didn't solve the problem. I found that the valve on the fuel sedimenter was stuck slightly open, so I removed the sedimenter, cleaned it up and replaced the O-rings.

After filling the sedimenter and filter using the pump on the filter, I can't start the truck. Motor turns over fine, but seems to get no fuel. It's 50 degrees outside today, so that's not the problem.

I have tried pumping fuel through the filter, using the hand pump on the filter and routing the fuel through a clear tube attached to the outlet side of the fuel filter. I've pumped a gallon of fuel through it, but still get lots of bubbles with the diesel. Seems like the bubbles ought to go away after a while, no?

I don't know exactly how that engine is setup, but I would guess somewhere between the filter and the tank you have an air leak. Check all the connections back to the fuel tank. How much fuel is int the tank? Could be a problem with the fuel pickup in the tank like is common with the 6.9 and 7.3 trucks.

did it originally have an O-ring on filter threads, if so and it has been omitted, this can cause it to lose prime, also if primer pump has bad seals or is not seated all the way down it can lose prime, this could also be your airiation problem, leave clear line between filter head & inj pump, bleed injectors (pump could be air-locked) this should get it started, watch clear line for airiation in fuel
