Fuel Question

Good day,

My truck as of recently has begun acting strange. It had started to stall again, I figured it was simply cold or damp out. On one of my latests trips out of town, the truck simply wouldn't go any faster and was bucking as it hit top speed (which slowly kept dropping). I stopped for a bit, and changed fuel filter, the symptons went away. I figured it was the fuel filter. Its gotten much nicer, and the truck is now stalling more frequently, and if you punch the gas, it will bog down, and sometimes stall.

Once again, I thought it was the fuel filter, there was very little debris in it. The truck did sometimes click as it ran, and I figured it was the water pump. Today it again stalled, and I couldn't get it started (very unusual). When i popped the hood, the fuel Filter was completely empty of fuel. That explains why it keeps stalling.

I was able to get the fuel back into the card (a slow trickle) and buy a new Fuel Pump (mechanical). Changed the old one out and tried the new one. I got the truck running, but noticed, the fuel filter was emptying of fuel. I undid the sliding clamp and pulled the fuel line off. I shot fuel clean across the yard. I'm pretty sure the new pump works.

The fuel filter immediately filled with fuel and everything seemed ok. I thought the pump maybe needed priming. Took it for a spin, the same. I could punch the gas, get it up to about 80 KM/H, and then it would start to buck, slow down and stall.

There has been some mods made to the fuel system. I am running the metal screw in filter on the carb, out to some rubber line, out to another plastic fuel filter, and to more rubber line, finally to the steel line that connects to the pump.

This setup has worked for over a year with no problems. I think the tank is rusting, as the fuel filter clogs up about every 500 KMs. The problem with rust as of late has almost been non-existant.

Since replacing the pump, the click at idle has gone away.

I vice gripped off the rubber fuel line feeding the pump when I swapped them. I didn't bother to check and see if the line flowed ok or not.

Where should I look next ? is there a pick up screen in the tank that could plug ? if so, could i simply run compressed air down the line and blow it clean ?

Yes

I would not recommend doing that. I would go ahead and pull the tank, and see what it's like inside, after you pull the sending unit and check the filter sock. If your tank is dirty, you will be haunted with problems off and on till you finally pull it. You may even have to get a new tank. I did. I got mine pretty cheap from www.raybuck.com Other places sell them too.

One little piece of dirt that gets by your filter system, and gets in the carb, will stop the show in a hurry.

Fuel Question

The connection at the fuel tank is very important as it can be drawing in air. Also I have pulled fuel tanks that were full of sand, rocks , & marbles. Probably the prank of some youngster. Recently I pulled a fuel tank with a coffee cup full of green slivers.Probably from someones siphon hose made from a garden hose. Have a great day.Broncomule
