Btw, getting that shifter out is no small task. Those bolts were torqued down good.
You have filled your transmission past full by 2.1 quarts of fluid. The fluid should be even with the fill port on the side of the case about halfway up on the driver side. Filling from the top, through the gear shift is not the standard practice, but a lot of us do because we put 6 quarts in with making a mess.

I would highly recommend removing the fill port plug and draining the fluid (not the drain port plug on the bottom) and letting the fluid settle at the fill port plug.

I don't know if overfilling the ZF6 by 2 quarts when it only takes 6 is critical or not, but I certainly wouldn't wouldn't put 5 gallons of oil in the oil pan.

I wouldn't worry about it many people have recommended overfilling them a little bit I have about 7 quarts in mine, and I always fill manual transmissions from the top, it's much easier that way.

@00t444e A little bit is equal to 2 more quarts than what the spec calls for? Not in my book...

You seem to disagree with me on just about everything I post, so I will leave this thread with a final comment and agree to disagree.

@beachcamperf250 , I too overfill the ZF6 from the top by about a 1/4 of a quart. Although, I would not waste an additional 2 quarts or risk damage (if possible for grossly overfilling) to the transmission.

I did a quick Google search and read the potential consequences of overfilling the manual transmission by more than 30%, perhaps go that route and make your own decisions based on what you have learned.

Good luck to you!

Fluid capacity is 6 quarts so 7 is only one over. The guy that rebuilt my ZF recommended doing that, I have put 40K on it since without any problems. It is also a common practice to do that with the NV4500, NV5600, and G56 transmissions in Cummins trucks.

I was watching AGT while reading his update and read his post as 6 + 2 quarts. My apologies...

Drove it in to work this morning, the rollover has been greatly reduced, its not gone, but less drastic, goes into gear about the same.

My initial fear was looking at the gears from the top and worrying I did not put in ENOUGH mercv as I could not see anything but shiny gears.

I did want to update that it is still doing the noise pretty good when I have the camper loaded, it is not as bad as it was but still very noticeable. I wanted to try going this route first, I guess the next thing is to try Redline next spring.

Ok guys, so this was exactly my issue:

And this guy found the issue:

Mine got worse while driving with the camper on it last night, so much so I limped it back home and now I am going to start looking for a new clutch to put in the ol girl. She was getting clunky shifting into 5th gear and I started getting more vibrations from the stick and another vibration noise so I am guessing the clutch or something around it is getting worse.

Now I have to figure out which clutch I want to go with, south bends are expensive, seems overkill for a stock truck, but I do have 5000 lbs sitting in the bed.

Good to hear you got it sorted out and installed a drain. SkySkiJason who serviced my ZF6 a few years back put a drain in my valley as well and we were very appreciative.

I am confused a bit though... Did you replace the clutch or are you still looking for a clutch? The video says you replaced it, but then your writing says you are looking for one.

I had a South Bend 1939OHD installed and it is great for towing 12,000 lbs cross country. The 1944 is the same clutch, but it includes the flywheel. You can see the HD clutch surface/friction area is larger which provides confidence in shifting and starting from a stop with heavy loads. There are plenty of other choices out there that are very well suited to long miles, but I didn't want to chance it with an OEM replacement in a truck that I use for towing heavy cross country 95% of the time.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear, that is a guy I found on youtube with the same issue as me and posted what his fix was.

I see, thank you for clarifying... I thought that was you in the video, my mistake.

Yes, gear rollover was 99% gone with the new clutch installed. The combo of the new clutch with the Redline High Temp ATF, I am unable to make the rollover sound even if I try. The clutch is expensive, but I have recommended it to friends on here and each of them have been happy with it. I am confident that this clutch was the right one for me.

Not too grabby and confidence inspiring when towing our 12,000 lbs cross country. Even starting on a steep incline at a stop sign or light, I just put it in L and let up on the clutch pedal and it goes. I must mention that I also have One Up Offroad traction bars.

Did you use your original flywheel and have it machined?

SkySkiJason had the original flywheel resurfaced as seen in the video below.

@sous, just to double check, if I wanted to get the flywheel I would get 1944-60K kit right? I am not sure I would trust anyone around here to resurface the flywheel correctly, figure I might as well replace it all for $700.
