Wives 79 SC. Here is the issue. The passenger window has not been opened in a looooong time. I opened it a couple weeks ago but is was extremely hard to go down or up. I had to help push it down and pull very hard to get it back up. Hard enough I was concerned the handle might break.
So I will take off the door panel to lube up the window track. What should I lube? ( bushing slide, seals, crank gears) What lube should I use for the differrnt parts? I know it will take time to get it to move smoothly.
If you can get the bottom of the glass out of the track, try the regulator without the load of the window to see if it is stiff and in need of removal, cleaning and lubing. (Might need replacing)
If it works fine, clean up the track and roller guide, then lube with any light grease.
It is kinda time consuming and involved to remove the regulator, but hey I replaced one.
For the window tracks try a dry silicone lube. Most auto stores have it and its in about an 8oz spray can. Use the straw to spray in the tracks and let it dry a couple minutes before rolling the window up and down.
Of course, won’t be any good until you figure out the problem with the regulator. I have seen rust develop behind the window tracks. See if there’s any deformities there.
If you don’t remove what is gumming up the mechanism, you can use any lubricant you wish, because they will all be as temporarily (in)effective. Remove all of the moving mechanisms...its easier than trying to service it in the door. Cleaning out all of the old lube and dirt will go further to making everything move, than simply squirting in some magic. I suspect you will find old, dried and dirty lithium grease....I hate it. Clean it all to bare metal however you can...wire brush, solvent...etc. it’s really helpful if you drill out the rivets in the window crank gears and clean them as well. Insure no mechanics are binding or loose glass runs have tangled up the path of the window as it travels. When its all clean, use a good quality light grease, like red gp grease. Don’t use white lithium! You may need new window rollers if the old ones are worn, which they probably are. When you first disconnect the window channel from the regulator by removing the roller clips...make sure it slides easily up and down the channels manually. If not, find out why.
If cleaning it up good doesn't do it you probably need new channel runs. they're cheap and easy to replace.
Also a good lube like break free or something on the regulator and the roller are a good idea.
Personally, and anyone with body shop experience will tell you this, never never never ever get anything with silicone near a vehicle. unless fisheye is a look you like. I won't allow it in my shop or on the ranch.
