I could be wrong, but off-road diesel is considered off-road because it has the dye in it and it's not taxed the same. It could be #1 or #2, or a blend. I can buy #1 or #2 at the pump at certain stations. Most stations have #2.
You are correct. Off road diesel is exactly the same as regular diesel with the exception of color. The stations use #1 or #2 or a blend depending upon the time of the year

Is it just the change in the color of a fuel that makes a difference or is there a side effect as well for using #1 ?

#1 diesel, kerosene and jet A are the same thing, (filtered and dried to different specs.) less oil / lubrication, less BTU but has a lot lower gel point ie. winter fuel! or blended for winter fuel.
your owners manual has a list of approved fuels, if #1 or kerosene is listed then it is okay to burn.
There have been changes to the page.and it took a while to even find out how to order. Then, you're right, Summer Plus does not show up. I've sent an email asking WTF and we'll see. I've been getting my Summer Plus there for 4 years. It also used to be the $4.75 shipping was for 1 gallon, but they've bumped that to 5 gallons. I guess I will be looking for another source. I haven't checked the OL site yet.
Okay, you can order direct from OL at Opti-Lube
You can compare with the Amazon pricing and shipping.
I have also been buying my Opti-Lube from them for the last 6 years. My jug was getting low and went I went to ordre more I found that the ordering page is broken. I sent them a fb message and will report back if I hear anything. They are so much cheaper than ordering direct from Opti-Lube or Amazon.
Used a few random additives, then tried Hotshots Secret https://www.hotshotsecret.com/ on both the fuel side and the FR3 on the motorcraft 10W30 oil on my '06 KR. Im sold on this stuff. Used the Diesel Extreme (https://www.hotshotsecret.com/diesel-extreme/) on my '04 because it has been very tempermental. Put the Diesel Extreme stuff in the fuel and I was a little dumbfounded how the truck settled down, ran smooth and the #4 injector started working correctly. BUT, the crappy bottle spilled on me multiple times - the lid would not secure tighly...nevertheless. the stuff works.

Fuel and oil additives like that are quite beneficial in a HEUI System that uses oil to fire the injectors. The plunger in this style of injector is prone to stiction.
Fuel Additive requirements for the 6.7 are somewhat different in that the CP4 is what needs lubrication, and not plugging the DPF is also to be considered.
