Additives?

Hey guys! I'm new here and new to Ford and diesels. First off, this site is awesome! I have a 2019 F-250 larriot powerstroker that's 2 months old. Absolutely love this thing. I have read a little about fuel additives to lubricate and bump cetane levels, but they were fairly old posts. So what have you guys been using that you feel is helpful and where do you get it? I'm from Central Illinois, we have farm stores, auto zones, and O'Reilly's for the most part. Thanks in advance!

Most of us still use the same additives as we stated in the older post. I use the Standyne blue (for year round use) and the lubricity. I swap between the two when I fill up.

I use these at every fuel up . Hydrotex Power Kleen and Hydrotek Essential Lube . I learned about this through the company I work for we drive diesel trucks non stop they have been using this product for a while now and it is the only additive that they put in their trucks. I also use their Synthetic oil Leo 15/40 . Enjoy the truck Keep up on fluid changes and recommended maintenance and it should last you a long time .

I use Motorcraft PM-22 and PM-23 (winter) for the cetane boost. I use Better Diesel FBC for the DPF.

Optilube as it has been shown to have the best lubricity. I just started using FBC to make the DPF last longer

Just an opposing view ... I've never used any additives.

My usage: very low annual miles and during the non camping season it will sit (parked) for several months.

Never used any additive in mine....I usually use Shell diesel which has a high cetane rating. Live in a hot climate so no need for any anti-gel additives either.

I only use cetane from the dealer. Most of the time when I tow. Most of the time I am cross country so I never know where the fuel comes from. Cheap insurance for the fuel pump. Reason I only use the Ford stuff is because Ford sells it so itg is ok for my truck. Not much for the after market for some of the important stuff for my truck.
I dont use Hot shot or anything like that. Not the newer trucks need something like that. I have 61,000 on mine

Thanks for your input guys. I got some decisions to make. I just want this thing to last a long time. I'm pretty good mechanically, but this diesel thing is a whole new animal. I actually enjoy and take pride in maintenance and I really want to do what's best for this engine. Thanks again!

Additives tend to fall into two major classes: generic lubricity/cetane boost/cleaners/stabilizers like Stanadyne/PM-22a, Diesel Kleen/Optilube/etc and soot reducers like Enerburn and BetterDiesel FBC. The first class can be the most confusing as their characteristics vary so much. PM-22A is Ford's lubricity product with little cetane boost, DK has cetane boost with little lubricity and my favorite Opti-Lube Summer Plus which is high in both and cost effective per dose.
The soot reducers both use a catalyst that significantly reduces soot which can extend the interval between regenerations and extend the life of the DPF, EGR and other parts affected by combustion.
Most US diesel does not meet the lubricity or cetane levels desired by diesel engine manufacturers. Only California and Eastern Texas mandate cetane levels above the US standard of 40 which is no where near the European standard of 51-55.

I use PM-22a in every tank. Locally I always fill up using biodiesel that claims to include the additive Power Service/Diesel Kleen.

That's a good mix considering that biodiesel provides lubricity that DK doesn't and DK provides cetane that biodiesel doesn't. You may not need the PM-22A, but it doesn't hurt.

If you're planning to keep the emissions equipment, I'm pretty well sold on Better Diesel FBC, my soot build up has slowed considerably, so my time between regens has gone up considerably (which has increased my mileage by .5 mpg so far) I like the Hotshot's secret Diesel Xtreme, and Everyday Diesel Treatment for lubricity, being as I'm unsure of fuel quality. Not sure if you live near any Kum & Go's but they offer fuel with PowerService already added to it, and Cenex offers a fuel called Roadmaster XL which is a premium diesel fuel with high cetane ratings and It has always quieted my engine/injectors and improved fuel economy slightly.
