Smile Engine swap questions.

Its been some time since I have been on the site, but I am in need of some information from all of the knowledgeable people that are here.I have a early 99 super duty with a 7.3 that is getting weak and have found a healthy 2000 model engine with low miles on it and am going to install it in the truck. the questions I have are , will the early 99 ecm run the late engine or will I need to replace it with a late one and if so what ecm number will I need to look for,and will the late model engine wiring harness with the intake heater plug in and work with the early truck harness ? any other things that I will need to change ? any information will be a great help.

You should be a direct swap. I put an 01 engine in my early 99. As long as you use the early wiring you should be good to go.

You need to diagnose what's wrong with your current engine before you waste money and time doing an engine swap that isn't needed. As for the swap the 2000 model will bolt right in and your computer will run it just fine.

There are two things you'll need to address in that swap because the turbo sits a little higher. There is a later version in a piece of the intake tubing that you'll need and you will have to get your exhaust down pipe to mate somehow. That could be as simple as pushing it up a little from below (if you have my luck that won't work) or could require taking the exhaust apart and maneuvering it, or might even have to buy a piece or two. I believe that the piece of intake tubing you'll need is the one that attaches directly to the turbo and is called the turbo intake tube but verify that before buying. It's a relatively cheap part.

Just as long as you use the early wiring your good. The 2000 PCM will run in it to. The only difference is the barometer in the early 99 is mounted on the right side below the steering column. After 99.5 and up they put it in the PCM. I just did a auto to manual complete swap between the two trucks to sell the auto. One was early 99 one was late 99. That was the only issue I ran into.

I should have put some more information in why I am changing it out. She is getting low on power, I did a compression test on it and found that 4 of the cylinders have 450 lbs,2 cylinders have 325 lbs and the other 2 are at 250. It also has a oil leak where the oil cooler bolts to the front engine cover. I have removed the cooler and found the mating surface of the front cover is eroded at the sealing area. It also has fuel delusion in the oil. That being said it would be less work to swap it out rather than everything else that it needs. I found a 2000 engine with only 86,000 miles on it with a three year warranty delivered to me for 2100.00. That being said I would like to use the 2000 engine harness to use the intake heating element set up. I have read in some posts that the early 99's run better if you swap out the ecm with a late one,but I have not seen any reference to what # ecm is the best one to use for this upgrade.

There it much advantage to having the intake heater, it does very little to help with warm-ups, and does nothing to help with cold starts since it will only come on after the engine has been running for a certain period of time, and it has to be below a certain temp and the parking brake must be engaged for it to work. I removed mine to install a boost gauge and it made no difference at all.
