I wonder if you have accidentally turn media volume off in android auto. Open AA and then hold you volume up key and see if you volume bar goes from empty to full.

well, had some time to fiddle... it seems that when plugged in, i cannot have bluetooth connection...
turn off bluetooth and the incoming call is fine...

but AA turns on bluetooth, even tho I tell it not to..

I think i have a repeatable scenario...

I set my phone (One Plus 5) to silent via the external switch...

when receiving a call while connected with USB cable, and android auto, neither side can hear the other..
turn off the silent switch and the call works..
