ID a tranny

I'm trying to ID an automatic transmission. Aluminum bellhousing. My friend thought it was a C4. I don't know what it is. It has a square pan with fill tube attached to the pan.

It's probably a 3 speed Ford-O-Matic from a car.

TRANS code PCC-A not listed in the truck parts catalogs.

C4 has 11 trans pan bolt holes, introduced initially in 1964 Galaxie 289/Fairlane 260/289, 1965 F100/250 240/300. Was never installed behind Y blocks.

Ford-O-Matic 3 speed has 14 trans pan bolt holes: 1953/56 F100/350; 1957/58 F250/350; 1957/60 F100, 1961 F100 with 223 I-6 only // Misc 1951/63 Passenger Cars.

The second link above shows Ford-Mercury. They list the trucks also, so it was a car trans if I'm reading that link correctly, and if that link is in fact correct.

It's an FX 3 speed. Fordomatic is a more general used name. They had a FX and then a MX. Both evolved into the FMX. This is what I read on the link. This particular unit is the small case unit. It is a 61 listed for Ford and Mercury cars.

Ford-O-Matic is not a Cruise-O-Matic!

FX is the small Cruise-O-Matic, it is not a Ford-O-Matic!

FMX introduced in 1969, was initially installed in Ford/Merc Passenger Cars with 351W's also introduced in 1969. FX & MX did not evolve into the FMX

FX & MX Cruise-O-Matic's introduced in 1958, the MX (aka BIG Cruise-O) wasn't installed in trucks until 1965.

MX was used 1965/67 F100/350 352 & 1965/72 F350 300 I-6. FMX = 1973/77 F350 300 I-6.

PCC-A = FORD-O-MATIC = 1961 Ford/Mercury Passenger Cars 292.

That's where it all gets mixed up! Yes this tranny is the small case. The rest I wrote was on a chart on a website. It also included that mis-statement about the FMX. Never thought it would fit in my F350.

.
Not quite true. The FMX used the more robust MX type internals in the smaller FX type case. The MX and FX were merged to make the FMX. Hence the FMX designation. So it is not incorrect to say they evolved in to the FMX as the FMX evolved directly from the MX/FX. Just as the XT Lod / AOD evolved from the FMX.
