Got it all together today, after dealing with some leaks, got the engine running. The lifters made some noise initially, but quieted down after a few minutes. After adjusting carb for maximum vacuum and setting timing to 10 BTDC, it idles kind of rough at 700 rpm. It's pulling only 15" of vacuum, and I'm pretty sure there are no leaks.
Had a satisfying road test; whereas the old stock heads had a hard time pulling past 5000 rpm, these heads pulled right up to 6000 effortlessly, and probably would have gone past if I had not let up. I don't know how the engine will hold up much past 6000. First gear is pretty useless; trying to accelerate past about 1/4 throttle, and the open diff just spins the right tire. It does give a nice chirp fast shifting into 2nd without my even trying. So I need to install the LSD next, otherwise all this newfound power is wasted.
and a really old F4B intake. So now I'm wondering if the F4B is limiting the power potential.
The F4B is not limiting it. A test was done several years ago between the RPM, Stealth, F4B, and some others and the F4B was neck and neck with the RPM and Stealth. Ford had two intakes identical to it, the C9OX, and the later Ford Racing A321, Shelby's old Cobra intake was another identical to it. The difference between it and the Stealth & RPM is the unequal length runners. I ran the A321 with ported E7's and a B cam and it pulled up to 6500 with that combo and a worked over Holley 600 ( removed the choke horn and blended it and replaced the bowls with dual feed ones off a 3310 750) To get higher rpms you'd need to go to a single plane like the Vic Jr
I ran the Vic jr on a stock roller short block topped with Canfield heads with the B cam and 1.7 rockers. It would pull up to 7500 rpms. Rods were stockers with ARP bolts. This wasn't sustained rpms but short bursts. In the end it was the block that was the weak link, it cracked the #4 cylinder wall mid way in the bore with a .040 overbore. Was fun while it lasted. (month and a half) Never repeated that. Stepped up to a 331 using the same heads. The Vic was soft under 3 grand.
I'm also running stock rods with ARP bolts, stock crank, and .030 cylinder overbore. Having spent so much time and effort on it, I want it to last more than a month and a half. I'll live with my current configuration for a while.
