Hi guys, I'm hoping you can help me with this wierd glitch I'm getting.
1994 F150 5.0 with MAF & E4OD around 150000KM
When I go out in the morning to go to work, I'll start my truck, it fires right up then CEL starts flashing and the engine dies. This all happens within 5-6 seconds. I'll start it again and it fires up no problem and runs perfect. I've performed both KOEO and KOER tests and get no error codes hard or continuous. I'm stumped as I have no idea where to go with this. I've checked all the plugs, and have looked for shorts in the spark plug leads.
If the MIL flashes in the cluster you should have a code set in the continuous codes.
that's what I thought too, but I've tried pulling the codes several times and it just gives me 111 saying all is good. It hasn't stalled while trying the koer test yet unfortunately. It might have given me some information if it had.
Mine does the same thing as yours. No error codes except the 111 all ok code. When the CEL flashes I get 4 flashes. I have been told this is the ECM recalibrating itself because it lost its calibration for some reason. I can't find the issue either. One suggestion was to clean the throttle body and replace the throttle body gasket. I haven't gotten around to trying that. Mine also has the peculiar habit of occasionally not accelerating on a hot start. When starting from a stop immediately after restarting the truck, I'll press the accelerator and get no response. The engine kind of bogs a little, but won't go until I jam the accelerator to the floor. After that the RPM's pick up and everything will be ok.
But you are correct about not having any error codes for this issue.
If it were me, I would just pull the PCM out and look over the board very closely.
As was mentioned, if you get a system pass code 11 or 111, and the CEL has been flashing, there is something wrong. And i would be pulling the PCM to look it over.
As a follow-up, this morning I jumped in and started the truck, it fired up immediately, then about 5 seconds later the CEL started blinking. I immediately fluttered the gas pedal and the engine caught again, the light went out and the truck ran me to work perfectly. I'm very puzzled by this.
My 93 would do that. Go to start it,and it would fire, run a couple seconds and die, restart it and it was fine. Never a constant CEL, drove it like that ( bought the truck and was not familiar with ECM controlled engines at all) drove it like that for 6 months and then all of a sudden one day it just started running pig rich and loping and acting erratic. The truck always had super firm, almost hard shifts, thought it was normal.
It was the ECM going the whole time.
Replaced the ECM all is fine.
I had an issue last January with a leaking windshield causing water to drip onto the ECM. Fried the computer and had to install a new one, it's not that old but who knows.
I had another thought, I usually only use the front gas tank, and I switched to the rear tank about 2 weeks ago, the starting problems began in the last 2 weeks. I'm gonna have my fuel pressure checked as well.
I filled the tank about a month ago, usually I only use the front tank but with snow I wanted the extra weight. I usually fill the rear tank every 6 months and run it almost empty. Interestingly though, it dawned on me the other day that I had this problem happen once last summer (around the time I would have switched tanks).I think it may be a problem in that tank though because I switched to the front tank and the truck is running fine. I'm thinking fuel pump could be possibly failing. Once the truck is running I can switch to the rear tank with no problems so I'm going to use up the gas in that tank and then just stick with the front tank for now, then maybe in the spring when it's not so cold out I'll crawl under there
I usually fill the rear tank every 6 months and run it almost empty.
Run it empty.....
Just a side note; Tanks never get “empty” and Ethanol fuel gets pretty nasty if it sits for 3 months or more. The water separates, and a zombie like substance is the result of the separation. Also the Octane level degrades over time. The zombie substance sticks to everything it can….
If you are going to leave a Tank “empty”, I suggest a bottle of ISO HEET gas line antifreeze, a small bottle of stabilizer during the “empty” period, and when you fill the tank add another bottle of ISO HEET gas line antifreeze and a bottle of Octane Booster.
I finally found out the problem. It's the EGR valve, it wasn't sealing properly. I unhooked the riser from the egr and put a dime on top of the pipe and reconnected it hand tight onto the egr basically blanking it. Engine is running WAY better, and starting issues are gone. I had also noticed pinging while climbing hills, that has gone away as well.
Obviously this isn't a permanent fix but it easily eliminated guesswork for me.
I hope this helps others having the same problem, and I appreciate everybody's help on this forum.
