This has been done many times on later trucks, and I believe it's just as easy on yours. I used a Hurst Indy shifter made specifically for this purpose on my 66. You would just have to search for a shifter that works with your 61.
I am looking to convert my 3 on the tree to an automatic trans with the column shift,
any thoughts on this swap?
Thanks
Scott
That's a lot more involved. You'd need a different column, carb/kickdown connections, trans cooler, swap from flywheel to flexplate/TC, possibly different driveshaft length... Maybe more I'm not thinking of.

Welding/fabrication skills, some electrical knowledge, definite driveshaft modification, possible custom bellhousing, it's a LOT of work, make sure you have the knowledge before you create a parts truck.
