hi guys I just had my truck in for a inspection. good news clean bill of health. bad news the shop recommends I do a external wastegate. around 5k total with cab off. they will install 6.0l manifolds, new up pipe, ac line relocate and the wastegate kit. has anyone done this? I am mainly looking for reliability not more power. I tow 12k pounds about 10k a year and 3-5k unloaded. also if the cab is off what else would you recommend gets done? I haven't found much online with 6.4l external wastegates. thanks any input helps.
Why would you need a waste gate with stock turbos, there’s no surplus boost, the engine can use all the boost the twin turbos can produce. More often than not you will be between 10 and 30 psi of boost and reary will be doing continuous boost over 35psi.
Waste gates are great if spin spin up is being hampered by the engines inability to use all the boost the turbos produce.
the 6.4 is notorious for collecting tar in the manifolds as a result of sucking in oil from the case vents. If you could get rid of the tar you intake would be less restricted.
the only way I know of cleaning out the tar with out removing the manifolds is to install methonal injection.
apparently my EBP is 70psi at 31psi boost. the shop was worried since I mainly tow with this truck that I would run the risk of head gasket failure. I am constantly between 25-35psi of boost.
I have a pressure gauge made specifically for measuring exhaust back pressure and I can tell you that the sensors in the manifold and the exhaust system (depending if you are stock or not) are not accurate.
with an unrestricted exhaust system the manifold EBP and boost can be 1:1 but should not be more than 10PSI EBP higher than boost. if you have a stock exhaust, you need to troubleshoot the sensors, exhaust restrictions, etc.
a stock exhaust after regen would have .04psi at idle, 1.61psi at 18% throttle, and 4.9psi at WOT. at 0psi boost.
I am DPF/EGR deleted, S/B cold air, 4inch straight pipe MBRP exhaust with a mini max on tow tune ( plus 50hp ). sorry I should of told you that from the get go.
Ok, reason I asked is becuase ford will detune an f-450/550 with 4.30 gears to 300 hp so that it prolongs engine life while at the same time these vehicles have tow capabilities that exceed 30,000lbs
in your case you have a tuner and I think you said you have plus 50 and plus 150 tunes on one hand and problems with excessive exhuast pressure on the other....instead of installing a waste gate...it would make more sense to run a smaller tube and if you need more towing capability change your rear gearing.
You might see some relief with an intake manifold change if your e siting intake manifold is tarred up.
70psi ebp is crazy with no dpf . Get a back pressure gauge and double check your sensors numbers.
truck has plenty of power and I only tow in the tow tune. I believe its plus 50 hp. so I guess what ill do is install 6.0l manifolds and the new down pipe and see what that does for me. like you said maybe my stock manifolds are gummed up. I double check EBP today and highest I seen was 51psi at half throttle around 30psi going up a 6% grade. thanks for the info I'm glad you wouldn't recommend a waste gate.
Look into water methonal injection. Basically blue windshield wiper fluid. It will cool exhuast , heads, increase power, clean out the entire intake and combustion system.
the kit I put in cost me 500 bucks and took about an hour to install.
