08 squealing from turbo

Long story short. I have been looking for a 6.4 for my 08 F550 for about 6 months now. I recently bought a run and drive '08 F250 crew cab truck from Copart in Greenwell Springs La. I drove from the Kansas City area to Louisiana and brought the truck back on the trailer.

When I got it home I started it and heard what I thought was a belt squeal. It appears to be coming from the turbo next to to the firewall. It's not a big deal to me since I have a good turbo on my bad engine. My conundrum is going to be that the truck I purchased for parts is too nice to tear apart. So, I am thinking of just replacing the bad turbo but thought I would ask here.

The squeal gets louder when you rev up the engine and goes quiet at the point when you let off the accelerator and it drops back to idle. Is this something that can be rebuilt or possibly just needing a cleaning? I haven't pulled the turbo yet as I just got it off the trailer and it is 13 degrees outside right now. Does this sound like a bearing issue??

I may have answered my own question. I need to look at a exhaust leak. A bearing won't stop squealing on deceleration. A exhaust leak or pressure leak would. I won't know until tomorrow.

That would be the first place I looked, probably one of the up pipes is leaking, not a fun job.

Seven degrees outside right now so I'm not inclined to crawl under it to look yet. If it turns out to be exhaust and can be repaired easily I may re-think parting the truck out. If it will be a pain to repair then I will go with my original plans and swap the motor into my F550. I'm still inclined to not destroy this truck after picking it up.

there are variable guide vanes in the turbo system that often sqeal

the squealing in mine comes and goes...seems to squeal mostly during long regens

why is the truck non operational?

did you ask the forum about the truck before you bought it? we do a pretty good job of scaring the crap out of to-be 6.4l owners before they buy one.

Truck is a lease turn in that went up for auction. It is not salvage and looks pretty decent. With the cost of used motors out there anywhere from $6-8k I found this truck and bought it right. It was advertised as a run and drive and it is but it does have the squeal. Once I got a good look at it I have been re-thinking pulling the motor and parting the truck. It is a crew cab short bed and is in pretty nice condition with no rust or major body damage. I figured if I pulled the engine and parted it out I would be about even money on the truck purchase and that would give me a motor for very little dollars. Once I sell the bad motor for core I would be ahead in $$.

I didn't expect the parts truck to be this clean or this nice when I bought it.

I found my answer. Broken manifold bolt and blown manifold gasket. Everything I see tells me to pull the cab and pull the motor.
