In The Bay Area, there's quite a market for local, sustainable, free range, organic, et cetera. I think it's crazy. But you see people paying a fortune, up to 4X or 5X supermarket retail prices per pound, at Farmers Markets. People with wealth are crazy about their food.
I know a guy who brings his family to a local ranch, where they get to see and pick out their food. They pick out the animal, and then pay the rancher to process the animal. They take everything edible, butchered into whatever custom cuts, and feel good that they are supporting a local rancher. They also consume everything head to tail, which forces them to employ different techniques to cook tougher cuts. They buy all their produce from the Farmers Market. There are a couple of stores actually in The City, where you can buy live chickens, which are butchered onsite to order. In The City, we have a lot of live seafood markets where the fish are still swimming in tanks.
The latest I've heard is that there are chefs who are negotiating with small farmers and ranchers to grow & raise product exclusively for their restaurants.
Is your farm a large enough operation to bring in a horticulturist? My brother-in-law's neighbor did that for a living. He went to most of the nurseries along the Pacific Coast Highway and did consultations on crop yield. He says that it's quite the science with soil ph, fertilizers, managing climate, et cetera. I know that he must be doing something right, since his trees yield the best fruit on the block.
Avocado is like growing gold. You can't go wrong, except for all the water it will take for those trees. I guess it's a different outlook on politics when we consider that Northern California's water is "shared" with Southern California. I wonder how The Gavinator will balance The State's water usage, water rights, et cetera. There is plenty of water, to sustain you, your land, your animals, and your crops. Only question is how much you have to pay for that water. And of course, we have to factor in that as our population and water usage demands rise, we have not kept up with dams, lakes, aquifers, use of reclaimed water, desalination, et cetera.
Hey everyone. I submitted a request to join this Chapter. I live in Herlong, CA, (Southwest of Susanville, almost to the NV border). I was wondering if anyone knows of any junk yards or salvage yards within around 100 miles of Susanville that have old vehicles? I'm looking for parts for my 69 F-250. Thanks.

You have been approved lambchops25, welcome to the chapter. I am sure you will enjoy your stay here.
I live in Fresno, so can't help with the junkyards, However, there is a big one in South Fresno county called Turners, that might have something for those old trucks. I have not been there myself, but I have heard they are not cheap compared with other junkyards.

I do enjoy exploring junk yards, but you are right about it being easier to find parts online.

I've been interested in cattle ranching/farming myself, starting small with 2/4 acres and 4 to 6 heads on somewhere to graze and supplemented with hay. I guess I'd get my water from a well into a holding pond or troth after filtration. I might send you a PM to ask some questions.
Still waiting on my truck to arrive first week of March expected delivery, staying busy buy shopping for parts to install while I wait.
