I am having problems with the shifting in my truck all of the sudden. As I left the parking lot, the truck was fully warm, I got a little thump from the trans and then later after a stop light it started to shift really funny. Between the gears the trans will hesitate to shift and the rpm's will go up and down a bit before it gets into gear. I changed the fluid and filter about 2000 miles ago and it shifted just fine before and after that. I also checked the level when i got home and it appeared normal. It is a 95 F250 with the 5.8 and E40D auto. I'm curious if it could be a bad sensor because the trans shifted fine before today, such as a throttle position sensor? Or maybe the thump I heard was the filter falling out and the pan is filling with fluid? After i got home I haven't driven it since just to let it cool down. If anyone has had similar problems I would really appreciate the help.
There are a few faulty sensors and their wires between the pcm and the solenoids that can be causing those issues.Getting the codes first is always the best place to begin, because it can help pinpoint the issue or at least get you headed in the right direction.
If you want a rough guess though, based on the fact you didn't say anything about your speedo or tach doing weird things, and your profile shows MASS for location,it could be a dirty solenoid connector/broken clip, not sealing up well and due to driving on slushy wet roads, the water got up inside of your connector.........but this could be way off without codes to help show this.
This can be a fairly common issue this time of year with older trucks and bad connectors. It's free to check it out anyway so.I still recommend getting the codes though,at least if nothing super obvious is found.E40D: The Importance Of A Clean Trans Harness
