I just purchased this truck a 96 f250 7.5 4x4 e4od and am getting the dreaded hard 1-2 shift. The truck has 194,000 and when I checked the tranny dip stick it did not even register so I decided I wanted to see what the pan looked like so I drained everything and changed the filter.
The fluid was old and dark but not really burnt. No metal in the pan and not much clutch material. I filled it all back up and reset the computer and went for a 40 mile drive today. It still shifts hard but not as hard so I did not get that lucky.
pulled codes and got codes
16 IDM signal not received
28 Vat sensor out of self range
62 4/3 or 3/2 pressure switch circuit failed open.
Not sure about the 1st 2 codes but I have read a lot about the mlp and tps sensor causing trans issues but not sure where to look now. I did remove the trans connectors and they were clean. So where to now?
I new something wasn't right. Looking at it on paper its code 628 Converter clutch Lock-Up error (E4OD). Does this mean my conveter is going? It does have almost 200,000 on it, Thanks for any help
That means you were just getting 628 over and over, which is what should have happened.
Basically, the converter is slipping, so the computer commands maximum line pressure in response to try and stop it from slipping, which causes hard shifts.
The converter could be bad (pretty likely, the converters were the late model E4OD's major weak spot still). However, if you didn't drain the converter on your fluid change, you only changed about half the fluid. An E4OD should have a converter drain bolt accessible through the bellhousing.
Thanks, I did drain the convertor also. I guess given the milage and the fact that I am going to rebuild and keep this truck for a long time I will go ahead and pull the trans and rebuild it and put a good dual disc converter in it. I am about to swap cabs on the truck so this will be a perfect time.
