Cool Help!! No Start hot

I found a 1991 E-350 ex Navy ambulance with less than 20,000 miles on it from Adak Island, Alaska. It is my diesel powered tool box! I have a marine diesel background and have had a couple of these 7.3 IDI's but this has got me stumped. It Starts cold but once turned off it has to cool to restart! Now if I only let less than a couple of minutes go by it will start right up but much longer and it's not going to go unless it totally cools off. It seems if the glow plugs cycle, it fires, they will not cycle when engine is warm and the engine won't start except with the 2 minute rule or less the plugs don't cycle but the the engine will start!!! Help sos 911 wtf?

The IP may have a hot start issue, try pouring room temp water on the pump when it does this. If it starts, your pump body housing is likely to be out of size.

Unlikely with a low mileage unit, but hear tell this can happen with higher mileage pumps, or a handful that were defective.

Also can try to disconnect the glow plugs and start with starting fluid, but i'm not sure if doing this helps with a heat soaked pump.

Congrats on scoring that porta tool mobile.

OH, Also check to make sure that you have 12v at the FSS, front connector at IP, by key on and removal of connector and touch it to the spade to listen for a good positive click at the solenoid .

Good luck

20k miles in Alaska likely entails a few thousand hours of idle time so that IP could very well be wore out.

i agree with the starting fluid test. Let it run up to temp, shut it down, then have a helper give it whiffs of ether while cranking. It should fire right off when warm, if it only coughs as it gets ether then that points to the pump.

another thing to remember is that the speedometer rolls back to zero when it reaches 100,000 miles.
so it may have a lot more miles on it. ...

but as Plum Crazy said, my bet is it has a couple thousand hours idle time on it and the injector pump is wore out .
