Hello everyone, My dad gave me a motorhome, ford E350 1994 with a Navistar 7.3, the first thing I noticed was starting problems, when the engine is cold it needs 3 cycles of the glow plugs to start, then it works fine, but when the engine is hot there is no way to start it, unless I put some starting fluid, yesterday took the motorhome to the anual technical check and once I get there I couldn't start it, so no check for the motorhome , So today I started looking for information and I found you guys, the first thing I found was the tread about the GP, read it completely and when I took off the office, started taking apart the engine and I found that the GP controler was replaced with a generic controller, thats why I had to make 3 cycles to start it, then measured the resistance on the two rears GP, one 0,5 ohms the other 1,5 ohms, take them out to check it, the one with 1,5 didn't have any marks on it the other was a BERU D4U, tomorrow after office I will take all them out, to check it, these can explain the cold start issues but I don't have any explanation on the hot not starting issue, do you have any?
Replace glow plugs with motorcraft/Beru ZD9s. Dont use any other glow plug. Most other brands have a habit of having the tips swell up and get stuck in the cylinder or break off. The first thing that comes to mind for having problems with a hot start is a worn out Injection Pump.
chileanE350 welcome to FTE and the idi forum
john got it covered sounds like you will need a set of beru zd9 glowplugs, return line kit ,and a new injection pump
Thanks for the fast response, how can I test the IP?, can it be repaired?
the hard warm starting is almost a sure fire indicator the ip is bad.as far as repairs yes it can be repaired but that is a complete rebuild which might run around $400 you can watch ebay for some used ones as well
I personally would'nt get a used one off of ebay. either have a goon injection shop rebuild yours or buy an exchange one. If your motor is turboed I would have yours rebuilt so you will still have the turbo ip.
Ok, thanks, the engine is not Turbo, it has 133000 miles so I didn't think the IP could be bad, I will take a look and see what's best. Whats the return line?
if you look on the top of the injector below the metal fuel line from the IP you will see plastic T's and L's all connected with flexible fuel hose...those are the return lines.
Look for puddling in the GP wells and in the valley pan, as this is where fuel will usually accumulate if they are leaking. Also, be forewarned, under each plastic cap is 2 O-rings...once you move/twist/touch the cap chances are it will those will start leaking. You can get a return line kit for under $40 that has new caps, rings, hose etc.
I would not rule out the IP quite yet, but if you have a leak up there it could be a contributor as it can cause the fuel system to lose its prime
What is the milage on your IP (most consider it a 100k replacement item)
before a cold start pull your filter and make sure it is full yo the top with fuel. if it is your return lines are not the problem if it's a little low return lines are one of the most common problems, another is the fuel heater on top of the filter header if it is moist here it will cause it. after you get the moror hot to where you are haveing hot start problems you can do the same thing, if the filter the problem will be with the IP usually. 133,000 miles it could very well be the Ip.

Shucks Star, I've looked all over for a "goon injection shop". Guess you've cornered the market.
My 93 has a start problem, If it is cold it will need to turn over for a minute before it starts, almost like it has lost prime. When warm it still starts hard but not quite as hard. This makes me think to rule out glow plugs. The batteries are new. Is there a check valve in this thing somewhere that may be allowing fuel to run back? Someone told me there was one in the fuel pump in the tank, is that a fact? Is there a pump in the tank?
