7.3 idi starts greatcold once hot will not start

I have a 1994 7.3 idi no Turbo
with 33,000 miles. when cold it
will start in less that 7 seconds
but after running the truck and
shutting it off it will not start until
it cools down a good bit. runs
good and idles fine when hot no
check engine. new fuel filter and
glow plugs. idk why it starts great
cold but will not start when hot
u can crank it all day. also the
speed its cranking is normal
speed when hot so its not the
starter

Are you certain the fuel shutoff solenoid is opening when the injection pump is hot? You should hear the solenoid click when you turn the key to the on position.

The solenoid may be sticking closed when the injection pump is hot.

Are you sure the truck only has 33,000 miles on it? What your describing is a worn out injector pump, but I've never heard of one wearing out at that milage. Next time it is hot and won't start, you could pour luke warm water over the injector pump, DO not use cold water, and if iit starts it conferms the pump is bad. WARNING This is extreamly hard on the pump, if the pump is good it can cause it to fail. If the pump needs rebuilt, it is not a long term fix.

yeah I'm sure the truck has only 33000 it only does it when its really hot so I should take warm water and pour it on the injector pump to cool it down

Do this to the injection pump and tell me your results:

Get her started and up to operating temperature....good warm so that the IP is warm. Shut it off....pour cold water on the injection pump to cool it off really good. Then try starting it.

Here's a hint: If the water bath helps, then your injector pump isn't long for this world.

And it also raises the rebuild price to double normal because the head and rotor are worn out. Get a uhaul pump to try if the water trick works, oh and pour the water on the line end.

Could be. When it's hot, turn on the key, and pull the wires off of the solenoid. There should be an audible clicking.

Smile Thanks for this inforamtion

Pouring luke warm water on the fuel injector pump really does work. Now it time to find a good fuel injector pump. We have been having problems for years with this and our mechanic was unable to diagnosis this for us.

My truck was doing the EXACT same thing when I bought it. The previous owner didn't tell me about it, and when we stopped to eat on the way home it wouldn't start back up. Not cool.

Bought a remanned IP from Columbus Diesel Supply, worked like a charm.

You're on the wrong forum for that truck, but it's probably the same thing.
