I drove a '99 F350 sc, lb, dually 79 k miles. I traded for an '03 F350 sc, sb, single rear. I drove that a little over 14k. Ford bought it back and I went to '04 F350, sc, lb, dually. Same configuration as the 99 'cept 6.0 instead of 7.3. The short bed simply did not compare in stability and comfort when it was towing, which is most of the time. I tow a 32' fiver, GCVW approximately 21k. The '03 was great in parking lots and traffic but came up way short while towing. I don't use the dually much for local use, I have a GMC Sonoma for that, (I bought it in a moment of weakness, it's a purty little thing.) The longer wheel base will be more stable and all things being equal, should have better ride characteristics than the shorter wheelbase. The 29 gallon tank was an absolute pain. At 10 mpg I couldn'make a full days run without fueling up somewhere. Plan on an auxilliary fuel tank if you are going to do any serious towing with a short bed.
I'm afraid I agree with the majority on this one. I owned a SuperCab short bed and was forever wishing I had more room. When I traded for a 2004 I went the long bed route. Within 500 miles I'd forgotten all about the extra length while driving but I'm thankful for that extra space every time I use the truck.
Also- as others have said... I happen to think the long bed looks "right" on a SuperCab. Somehow having a bed that's not much longer than the cab just kinda looks funky.
Short bed standard cabs are hella cool, but they are not made by any manufacturer (HD trucks, that is).
I have seen some custom RCSBs, usually lifted.
Since I don't have anything to haul or tow, that would be my dream configuration.
Here's one of maybe 2 or 3 votes for the short bed. I've been in Construction for 19 years, and have never really found a need for a long bed. Plywood and Drywall both fit in the short bed fine with the tail gate down. Anything of real length, 10' +, gets delivered. I've owned 3 short beds, including my current, and have never found the need for a long bed. JMHO. Parking in the city is easier, or at the mall. On the trail hunting, or try hauling a 27' Scarab w/outboards. That 1.5' makes alot of difference. A short bed can haul a yard of stone no problem. Just my $.02.
