Block Heater

Hey guys!!

I had a wake up call last winter when I went out to my truck and unplugged the block heater cord. It separated with little strings of melted plastic sticking to each end... So now that's cold i'm finally figuring it out.

I bought a new heater cord and I went to check the ohms tonight. It is showing 28.5. Way over the 15 ohms that i have seen in posts here. Does that mean my element is bad?? It's about time for a fluid change so i thought i better see what you guys think before i put myself through that.

Thanks for looking!!
AJ

Generally if the cord melts, and it wasn't pinched or cut to ground or something, the heater is bad. I'd see if you can look up Fords spec's on it first and go from there. Maybe someone will check in with them.

AJ, if you’re due for a flush anyway I’d change it out because depending on what year (?) truck you have it’s 15 years old. And it’s easier to change when the block is empty. And if you live in a climate that justifies plugging it in why not just know it’s not going to stop working when you need it most?

I bought this one for mine because it’s made in the USA and it’s not some cheap Chinese special. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1500W-Ford-...-/110753623800.

On a side note, what are you changing the coolant to? You can get away from additives if you use the CAT EC-1 red coolant. There is a cutoff though if you have a early 99 or before
as a general line. Something to do with injector cup sealant.
