block heater help

Hello all the other day my block heater cord burnt up right at the block heater it was shooting sparks! it sounded like a power line arking lol

my question is does the cord screw into the heater is there a nut holding it on? also I plan on ohming the heater element itself to see if it is shot what should it ohm out at cold

thanks.

I don't know what the actual ohms should be and I ALSO think it should not change due to the temperature.... a domestic hot water heater filament (in your house) is about 14.? - 15?.

It's about 15 ohms.

Thanks for the reply I,m kinda hoping that it was just the cord that was dork-ed I would rather change the cord than drain the coolant to change the heater.

15 ohms is aprx. right. High-school physics: V=IR and P=IV.

P=IV:
P=1000W = I*120V, so...
I = 1000W/120V, = 8.3A (aprx).

V=IR
120V=8.3A*R
R=120V/8.3A, = aprx. 15A.

So it is a coolant heater, not an oil heater?
ON THAT NOTE: can we somehow MOD it to make "insta heat"?
I mean to to make soooo hot it opens the thermostat to make heat go to the coils quicker? (When plugged in overnight)

You don't need to open the T-stat, that's just wasting heat. Mine gets probably something around 130 to 140F by touch guess. The heater is blowing warm air in maybe 10 seconds. In under a minute the cab is comfortable... even in the single digits.

Are they rated for continuous duty? like several days at a time? I've been leaving mine plugged in for the past few days.
