97 f250 4x4 5.8 auto. Lately on acceleration from a stop, I hear a high pitched squeal that goes away as speed increases. Last night I’m driving home and I noticed the speedo/odometer wasn’t working, the OD light on the end of the shifter was blinking , and the trans was shifting REALLY hard from 1/2 , 2/3 and then not going into OD. Is this a sensor issue? I stopped the truck, turned it off, then back on twice and it went back to normal. Any thoughts ?
My thoughts are to get the codes read. Without the codes, NOBODY knows what's wrong. The places that read codes free CANNOT read the codes you need. Go to an good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
Yep everything else was back to normal. I guess I was wondering if the speedo quitting was the problem or if the trans problem caused the speedo problem.

Once you have the codes I may be able to answer that question.

If the speedometer(PSOM-- Programmable Speed Odometer modual) was dead, then the ECU will not get good speed info from it and that will cause the E4OD to hard shift, OD light to blink ect.....
If you do pull the codes, you will most likely get the VSS(speed info) bad codes and possable other codes. But the the first thing is to find out why the speedometer went dead. Bad connection in power going to the speedometer(PSOM) is most likely. There has been threads in past year of this problem and the fix they found.
Other issue could be the PSOM it self is going bad. Most problems of a failing PSOM will look like a transmission problem with the E4OD and speed control hunting or not working BUT the speedometer will work fine. A capacitor on the PSOM will leak acid out and damages the PCboard so the PSOM cannot send out good speed information to the ECU which controls the engine AND E4OD functions.
As for the strange noise, I do not know what that could be without hearing it.
Diagnosing an intermittent problem is tough. You may need to wait and see if it happens again to swap them. In the meantime run codes. http://www.troublecodes.net/ford/eectest/ Sandy
Is the PSOM part of the speedometer itself? I have another Gauge cluster I could use to see if that solves it?
Yes, the PSOM is the PC board behind the speedometer. It's the brains of the speedometer/odometer.
Switching out the speedometer/PSOM could help in diagnostics, but for intermittent power problems, switching out may cause more issues or other issues.
These things are getting old and parts will fail. I am on my 5th PSOM pcb in my 95 E350 bus now(most were acid damaged from that leaking capacitor). The last few PSOM's had different problems and I had to figure them out. The latest one is now the odometer shows "error.3"........
