For a long time now, I've been having issues with my transmission. Its in a 1997 OBS F350 2WD, 4:10s, with 96k miles. To me, it feels almost as if the truck thinks it has a load on it. What makes this interesting is if I unplug the batteries and plug them back in, the problem goes away, but will come back over time.
All gears shift hard to the tune of 2500 RPM+ occasionally. Again, if I unplug batteries, it stops. I've also noticed it doesn't happen often if the truck was just started. Once it warms up, it becomes more frequent.
Neutral Safety Switch has been replaced, no codes, and I have an LED 3rd brake light (heard that could cause problems, but that was only installed a few weeks ago, and the problem is much older than that). There is also a really old trailer brake on it that has a red light on.
I think there are codes stored and you don't have the right tool to read them. When transmission codes are stored it will cause the trans to shift hard. Disconnecting the battery clears the codes until the error is seen again.
The late shifts suggest that it could be a vehicle speed error. That could be caused by a bad vehicle speed sensor (VSS) or more likely, a bad PSOM module on the back of the instrument cluster.
I checked with an AeroForce Interceptor, but I didn't have any codes. Though I don't know if it's capable of reading transmission codes. The VSS has been replaced using a motorcraft sensor. I tried it with an auto parts store one and it didn't really fix the speedo bounce I had going on.
Now, the speedometer does have what looks like a slight vibration in it, would that be another telltale sign of the PSOM being bad? I've been trying to research this problem for a while now and had never even heard of a PSOM before.
