Mirrors

What’s the trick? Couldn’t tight up stock ones, bought repro, same deal. Are there supposed to be nylon washers included I didn’t get in packaging or what? I’ve tried the 3 little Phillips screws and have bottom screw tight as heck to the bracket on these swing lock mirrors or whatever they’re called, and still cannot keep damn things from wagging and moving everywhere. The brackets themselves are very stable. Surely there’s a trick I’m missing.

So the head is loose on the ball joint that the mirror adjusts on? The u-bracket to the door is ok?

Yes. The u bracket could probably support a 4 x 4 tied off it and drug beside the truck, but those dang upper mirror assembles wobble and move when I close the door and so on. Constant readjustment. Bottom bolt holding mirror assy to bracket tight as I can go without stripping I’m sure. 3 little Phillips on mirrors bottom tight as I can get.
Which is why I wondered, is there supposed to be some rubber or nylon or brass washer I didn’t receive in my package or that’s a known fix. I have weeble wobble brand new mirrors to match my stock ones that wobbled like Foster Brooks at an October fest.

Those 3 phillips screws are your adjustment for the swivel ball joint. Take the mirror head stud back off the u-bracket, and adjust the phillips screws while you wobble the stud around and you will see what I mean. If it won't get tight enough, not sure what you could do to fix that. They usually hold better after it sits out in the weather and gets a little rust on the ball.

Yep, n matter how hard I tried with Phillips, the trick is to take them off. I got a lot more torque m those Phillips screws holding mirror in my arms. Thanks again.

I don't think the factory mirrors have the 3 Phillips screws to tighten up, I think that's just the aftermarket ones. And I haven't seen aftermarket mirrors that didn't suck. The factory ones were typically a LOT more expensive, but also typically a LOT better. Unfortunately the mirrors for my '97 are no longer available from the dealers, so I'm guessing older ones won't be either. Your best bet is probably searching for NOS, or else used original mirrors. They'll probably still be better than most of what you can find in a parts store.

So, instead to start a new thread maybe some one heare can put me in the right direction to know were can I buy a pair, or it would be better make my ones with some kind of plastic material.

Thanks for your thoughts.
