Carbs
I also run a Avenger on my 390 so that covers two basic styles. I've spent a lot less time with the Avenger than the Edelbrock but that's more of a need for speed rather than problems tuning.
I run a manual choke but I'd rather get it and go "every single day".
I'm sure you dealt with a few carbs.....go with what your comfortable with would be solid advise.....right?
the argument that always comes up..."they're know for lean bogs," or "they're just crap," or anything of the like can easily be applied to any one of the carburetor designs...just as easily as it can be used when talking about any one of the "big three" trucks.
try to assess what the main function of the truck is going to be, weight, average distance to travel, desired mpg, and other variables and try to make an educated decision based on factual information that you find in your research, not just gathered opinions.
having used summit carbs, autolites, holleys, edelbrocks, and several others....i'd say they all have their selling points, depending on which engine its being mounted to, and how it is to be driven. they also have their own inherent drawbacks and/or possible QC/QA issues.
Regardless of the carb you choose, don't get into a hurry. Take your time when tuning and do some homework. what has worked best for you or your buddies in the past, may not apply to your current application. the usual "tuning kits" and/or "manuals" for these carbs aren't to be taken as gospel. they merely give a fella a decent starting point, and are more like guidelines than anything else. further driveability issues can be resolved with a little more time, elbow grease, and grey matter.
