There is a huge difference between a Federal Prison and a Military Prison. There are two prisons in the Leavenworth area. The Fed Prison in Lansing, KS and the Military Prison at Fort Leavenworth. These two prisons are about 16 miles apart. At the Military prison, there is no Parole, there is no early release for good behavior. If you are sentenced for 19 years, you do 19 years. No get out of jail free cards.. Period.

I was thinking along the same lines. In some cases there is no doubt that they are guilty - 3 eyewitnesses, caught on tape, etc. and in other cases it might depend upon who's got the best lawyer.

How about this:
A - your dead-bang guilty -- take you out and hang you on the courthouse steps.

B - Very good chance your guilty -- Get ONE appeal or 3 months, then take you out and hang you.

C - Probalby guilty - Two appeals or one year, then stretch your neck.

D - Kinda iffy -- Three appeals in two years, then life in a rat hole.

I just meant it jest is all. Had the little EEK smily face on there, too. Just a little humour with a twist.

But, it's the rules that count.

Gotta play by 'em.

The exile question is a good one too. Send them to australia- wasnt it a "prison colony" to begain with?

If I were guilty I'd much prefer to be executed than spend years as Leroy's "girlfriend".

Hangin's too good for 'em.

I do agree that many of the comforts should be removed but I'll bet the guards would be at greater risk if you did. "Stir crazy" prisoners would be harder to control.

I think letting them weight train is an especially bad idea.

Send them to California. They will get 2nd chance, a 3rd chance, a 4th chance, a 5th chance, a 6th chance, and then a California Judge will overturn all convictoins because the Police made them sit in the back of the squad car. Citing "Police Brutality" for actually arresting a criminal.....

How about a "survivor" type exile?

Find some remote island in the Pacific. Drop off all the death row prisoners on the island. Airlift in just enough food and supplies for half the people to survive. Also, airlift in some weapons, booze, and drugs and watch the people go nuts. Then, televise everything in prime-time.

Kinda like the Arnold movie Running Man, only updated a few decades.

Just kidding - but it would take care of them.

If you are really inn then you should (hopefully) have enough evidence to prove thus. Also, there are not as many innocents conv. as you might think there are. And I agree with the lawyers and politicians.
I have looked at per capita rates - have you? Texas is 3'rd behind Delaware (about the size of Houston) and Oklahoma, but has the highest murder rate - is capitol punishment working? We catch enough to lead the nation. Illinois recently exonerated 13 condemmed prisoners from their death row - what is an acceptable ratio of innocents to guilty - 10/1, 50/1? There is no denying that innocents are convicted and, knowing this to be true, is it acceptable for us to kill them, and if the answer is "yes", what kind of society does that make us?

Again, also look at the amount of immigrants (non Texans) that are involved here, granted it was already stated...and after reading bubba's post...I do rather like his idea....and Dono, you gonna get rid of cap pun? If so, I retract my vote. I would run, but I gotta wait till the 2020 election.

Rather than the death penalty, I like the idea of exile. If you are found guilty of a heinous crime you are no longer welcome in our society. We won't kill you, but we will make you leave permanently.

This prevents us from executing the innocent while protecting ourselves from repeat offenders.

The only catch to this plan is "Where do we exile people to?"

I don't know. I suppose this is one of the reasons it hasn't happened yet.

well...I think our justice system should be totally reworked from the ground up... for theft - you lose one hand..do it again, lose another. rape - well you know. save execution for the murders....start out and follow thru with all convictions. Immedately after conviction, chop off the hand....let them see that justice will be swift and complete. then you see somebody running around without a hand or other body part....you know what kinda life they live ~ stay away. those who we can't figure out and need life in prison...put em in, but lets go back to breaking big rocks into little ones....or cutting grass with the old idiot stick....or farming work or something...if they are going to be in jail after having taken from society...they need to do something in order to give back! new punishment system...new respect for the law!

What happens to the guy wrongfully convicted of theft? Or rape? At age 18 he can no longer have children?

I do think our prisons are a joke. We need to rework that phase of our criminal justice operation.

guess that would help with adoptions ....I don't know other than it would sure help people to think about who they associate with and where they hang out... I don't think there would be near as many that would be willing to hang out with the "wrong"crowd.

and if you had to chose between death and a missing appendage... I think the choice would be easy.

Fisher, not that it don't sound tempting, but that hand-cutting off thing might fall under "cruel and unusual punishment"

I think we are on the right track here. Something needs to be done to be sure the guilty receive swift punishment and the innocent are set free.

What about mistaken identity?

What I am driving at here is the idea of reversibility. When you execute somebody you cannot take it back. When you throw someone in prison, you can let them out. Granted they lost some years of their life, but not their whole life. As seeing how humans are falliable, I have a difficult time feeling comfortable making a such a permanent decision on a very grave matter (no pun intended).

Exile. Still the best way to go. I say we work with Cananda on this and lease Baffin Island or maybe talk to Iceland and borrow Greenland.
