7.5L (460) vs 6.2L

Now this is all hypothetical, but im curious...

Everytime i see a thread like this its always "oh the 460 is a turd" etc etc.

Lets say, a 10,000 lb load, and a steep hill. Both 2wd, reg cab, trucks with a 4.10 rear. One with a 460, other with a 6.2.

Now, what im wondering is, who gets to the top first?

But heres the kicker...the 6.2 has to start in manual 2nd to match the E4ODs 1st (2.46 for the E4OD, 2.31 for 2nd on the torqshift) to make things fair and best compare just the engines.

The 460 hovered around 400ftlbs most of its EFI life at a nice and low 2200rpm. At idle its making around 360ft lbs. I know the 6.2 also hovers around 400, but at a much higher rpm (pushing 4000IIRC), so i highly doubt it can match the snort of a 460.

Who wins here?

First gear in an E4OD is 2.71:1, not 2.46:1.

The 6.2 uses more modern SOHC architecture, while the 460 uses the more traditional pushrod-OHV architecture; thus the reason for the widespread between rpm's. In my opinion, both engines have a lot of untapped potential. Otherwise it sounds like they might be about even. Although a 6.2 is not available with a 4.10 gear; either a 3.73 or 4.30 in open or e-locker. Just for sh*s and grins, let's throw the Triton V10 in the mix too!

Ive always heard the 460 can outsnort a V10 down low, but the V10 spanks it at highway speeds. Never ran a V10 but that description i know is pretty accurate for a 351 vs a 5.4

I have a fifth wheel which weighs around 25k lbs. I have towed it with both a 6.2 and a 460. Though both engines have similar torque. There's a big difference between 235 and 385 horsepower. There is a grade leaving my hometown. My 460, falls on its face over 4,000 RPM. With an E4OD transmission, it had to downshift to first gear to pull the grade. As a result, the 460 pulls the grade at 30 mph. My 6.2 with a 6R100 downshifts to 2nd gear on the same grade. However, it pulls the grade at 5500 RPM. As a result, the 6.2 pulls the same grade with the same RV at 50 mph. I was as surprised as anyone by this. While torque is what you need to get the load moving. Horsepower is ultimately what determines how fast the grade will be pulled. I hope this adequately answers your question about the 460 vs the 6.2 towing. That being said, with a change in heads and camshaft. The 460 will easily produce 500 horsepower and outperform the 6.2. I am actually about to do these exact modifications to my 460. If you would like, I can repost how fast the 460 pulls the grade after modification.
