Hello all, I thought that this question might have been posted here before but a search did not turn up any such discussion. I am curious to know what you all think is the better engine for day to day use and for towing. I'm asking because I'm in the market for an F250 (doesn't have to be new). I am very familiar with the old 460 and have had good success with them but I'm not one who believes that things can't be improved upon. Also, after lurking in this forum for a few months now, I see that are very happy with the V10. My reasoning for posting this question in this forum is that I figured that many of you were 460 owners at an earlier time before going the V10 route and could offer informed opinions. Thanks for any help that you can provide.
I bought a 79 F150 with a 460 new in May of 79. I've had many more after that and aside from some carb issues in the 80's never had a single problem. I was forced by the times to try a V10 in 2000. It was a strong running truck. The two biggest factors that caused me to eventually favor it over the 460 was the fuel economy is about 25% better and it has a much broader powerband, which I need for towing. On heavy acceleration with a load, say getting on a freeway or climbing a grade the 460 (my last one a 97) had a spot where the power dropped off dramatically, you can look at published hp/torque curves to see it, where the V10 will keep pulling. Case in point is climbing Raton Pass in northern New Mexico with a load. The 460 powered truck would pull it at 55 mph in second gear (4.10 ratio) on the last part of the climb before reaching the summit. Pulling the same trailer, which I did again last week, with the V10 (I have an '03 now with 77,000 miles and 3.73 ratio) achieved 67 mph in 2nd gear at 3750 rpm.
If I had the choice I'd probably stay with the V10, so far they have held in there right with the 460 as being trouble free.
I posted on this very topic just after I got my V-10! I drove an F-250 reg. cab 4x4 for a long time pulling stock trailers and loaded with hay and other various ranching tasks and then I got a 2002 F-250 crew cab with 3.73s V-10 and did some of the same tasks. I was very happy with performance of the V-10 it in my opinion out performed in every way and the new truck is allot heavier than the 460. I would not go back to a 460 from a V-10 but I do still have the truck with the 460. I also still have a 1976 F-250 with a 390 in it. All the trucks have a place in my drive way but the V-10 sits in the garage I pull a 26ft camper a 18ft boat and other trailers and I love the V-10 and would recomend it to anyone wanting a bigger gas engine.
PS the 390 has around 250,000 miles on it and the 460 has around 150,000 and the V-10 has almost 80,000 on it so you can see I use my stuff!!!
Take Care and good luck

I have owned 2 460's and a V10. All have been trouble free for many many miles. The main reason I went with the V10 is I wanted something different. I was tired of the same old interior of the 80's and 90's trucks. I wanted a more comfortable ride and so on. I never got tired of the 460 just the packaging around it.
My experiances were just as PaulM described.. Interesting in that I also have pulled loads over Raton Pass with both trucks. V10 is much broader powerband and significantly easier on fuel for same loads and speed. I loved my 460s except at the pump. I am an dedicated V10 fan as it is the very first American made motor that I did not feel the need to tinker with and "make better". Right off the lot it is GOOD ENOUGH! In fact I bypassed buying a new 04 with ALL the discounts just so I could get my hands on a 05 3 valve 415 V10 and 4.30 gears... can't wait!
It's no contest. The V10 is superior. My 1991 Class C Motorhome was 27' and weighed 10800 pds wet with a 460 and E4OD. Got about 9.5 to 10.0 MPH. The new 2004 Class C motorhome is 29' and weighs 12,200 wet with the V10 and R4100 and gets 9.5 to 10.0 MPG . The big difference is how quite the V10 motor is while running. It's like a swiss watch. The V10 pulls easier and stronger. The one downside is the V10 does not seem to have the compression braking going down steep grades the 460 had.
My Banks Power Pack equipped 96 460 was stronger than my 02 V-10 until I did the same thing to the V-10.The V-10 will flat out whip the 460.However,the 460 will pull at 500 rpm lower at the bottom of the rev range.Of course the V-10 has about a 800 rpm higher redline.
I bought new an 87 F250 Supercab 4x4 460 4 speed manual 4.10 gears, last year of the 4 bbl. carb version. Drove the truck over 200k miles with no problems and original clutch. Never saw 11 mpg, ever! Great power, good towing machine with a 4 horse gooseneck trailer & 4 horses, and comfortable.
BUT not anywhere close to the present 04 SD Supercab 4x4 V10 6 speed 4.30 gears I own. Better torque, better fuel mileage at 14-15mpg, much better towing machine and equal in comfort. Jury still out on whether it'll hold up as well over the long haul.
