I've put the throttle spring back on my carburetor the same way that it was set up when I bought the truck but I'm not sure if it's correct. It seems strange that Ford would have attached it to the cotter pin. Does anyone have there's set up differently or is this the way it was originally done?
There is a hole in the floor pan on the passenger side where a cotter pin goes. The mat hides it. The return spring attaches to that and the arm on the linkage.

Thanks for the description. Does anyone have a picture of that setup?

As noted by the others, the cotter pin spring attachment is factory. Believe it or not. Fred's pic is absolutely correct.
I just measured my spring and it's only 5 1/2" long but the distance from the firewall to the arm on the linkage is about 9". I guess I have the wrong spring. I don't have anything else I need right now so it's not worth ordering just the spring. Will probably leave it the way it is for now since it seems to work.
I too seem to have the same set up in my 50 Ford Custom but I have no spring. do you have the size? and or where do I get one. thanks Greg
Is your 50 Ford Custom a car or a truck? If it's a car, the folks here on a truck forum may not have a good or correct answer for you. I have a lot of truck books and catalogs, but nothing to help with car parts.
The only readily available spring offering for the 1950 226 Ford Custom is the "universal fit" C7AZ-9737-C which is not an improvement as you custom fit it...
@grgrywils , I may have been on the wrong trail above... Are you looking for the spring on the 9725 assembly?
If so, the whole assembly is 8HA-9725-A and possibly could be found on the used but serviceable secondhand market: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124575374001
