What does the spring go to?

I was working on the floorboard of the truck and found a broken spring. The spring is anchored on the passengers side floor board interior by the heater and went to something under the hood of the truck. Was there a throttle return spring or something there? The reason I ask is my throttle never returns to idle I always have to pull it that last last bit. Never looked into it yet haven't been able to drive it anyway.

My 51 has the 226 6-cylinder in it also, and from what I understand the throttle linkage return spring is located on the firewall inside of the pivot, on the throttle cross shaft, on the passenger side close to the heater. The spring on my truck was missing and the last owner has put a spring from that pivot on the manifold down to the frame. That caused the linkage to bind and the pivot to deflect not letting the carb open to full throttle. In case you will be looking for that spring I found it in Mac's catalog. The 48 to 79 catalog didn't show it, I found it in there pre 48 catalog. I hope this helps, if I left you totally confused send me a personal message and I will send you some pictures of how I installed the spring.

This probably won't help a lot as mine's an eight, but on it the return spring is anchored in the hole provided for it in the vertical portion of the throttle pivot at one end and, at least for now, on the heater shut off valve at the other end.

The picture is a little small here but you can see the spring hanging down under the outlet for the heater core and a little to the left. Looks like the rest of it is broken off.

I can't email you, you have this function turned off in the "user cp". I would like to see the pictures. The part number of the spring would be great also. I figured I would have to take the linkage apart clean it up and see if it still sticks.

Just a thought, but shouldnt that spring be holding that hose off the eng, so not to rub thru the hose?

Could be, I was thinking about that also. That hose is in the wrong place currently. I need to hook it up to the heater core. When I got it was like it is now the back is hooked directly to the front. I should take that heater core in and get it checked and rebuilt if needed.

Never got a good reply

This appears to be a factory part as both of my trucks have this. What is that spring for?

Back to The top Again

OK, one of the guys who does stock restorations has to know what the spring is for. Or maybe what should be there.

Well I got a parts book and that spring is a pieces of the throttle return spring for the truck. THe 6 cylinder 226 had a spring from the firewall to the carb from the factory.

That's what I thought, I'm still not satisfied with the performance of the spring I installed ont the cross shaft.
Does your book show how the linkage pivot on the manifold goes together. The previous owner had a spring on it from the carb actuator arm down to the frame. When the throttle was pressed it caused the pivot to twist againist the spring in the pivot. That twisting caused the carb to be unable to turn/achieve full throttle.
