I don't intend to start a thread on anything as controversial as oil type/brand, change interval or even oil filter. However, I was just curious what those of you with V8s do when it comes to pre-filling the filter before you install it. On the 4.0 motor, the filter is vertical and I can fill the filter nearly full before installing. When you start the 4.0 up after an oil change, there's oil pressure almost immediately.
On the 5.0, the filter is close to horizontal and I can't get it very full before it starts spilling out the filter when I install it. The last time I changed the oil and filter on my 5.0, I heard some knocking from the bottom end and general clattering for a short time after startup. I've had the same issue with my 4.6 T Bird. That filter is horizontal. I'm thinking next oil change that I will pull the fuel pump relay before shutting off the engine and letting the engine die from lack of fuel. After installing the oil filter and filling the engine with oil, I'll dry motor until I see the oil pressure gauge come off the lower peg.
Has anyone noticed more noise than normal after the first startup after an oil change on your 5.0 or 4.6 (if it has the horizontal filter orientation)? Does anyone else even bother worrying about this? I'm not used to hearing noise like this after an oil change so it's got me a little concerned. Just curious about the experience of others with this.
I have driven trucks for 45 years.. Several over 200K miles... I have NEVER filled a filter prior to install.. The 5..4 motors have a horizontal filter and my first truck was sold at 250K miles, and my present truck has 175K. ... Dyno oil at 5K intervals.
Unless it's a diesel engine, I never prefill filters. If it does anything, its negligible in the very long run. You'll run into other problems with the engine sooner than see any results for profiling that filtern
If the filter is positioned so it can be filled prior to installation I do it. Not that it really matters. But it doesn’t hurt anything and only takes a few secs. I have a couple if engines that thump a little until the filter fills.
