Changed oil today, Not nearly as bad as people has portrayed, Filter came off easy, oil was still very clean, no problems, I was worried about the startup noise everyone had spoken about, I prefilled the filter and no noises at all during the first seconds.
Very pleased with ease of change, truck is smooth as silk, no vibrations, I like my truck better everyday....
Glad to hear someone had an easy time with the filter. Nothing gets me throwing tools and swear words more than a hard to reach filter that's on too tight.
I've never pre-filled a filter. It's never even crossed my mind since they are usually at an angle or have to be manipulated in such a way that the oil would run out before I had it in place anyway.
Unless you run your car well past 3k miles between oil changes you should expect the oil to look fairly clean.
My filter was pretty tight. I made a few grunts and groans while I tried to break it loose without stripping the filter wrench on the filter, but with the right amount of pressure and steady turning it came off easy enough. I love the fact that I didn't have to jack it up to change the oil Just crawl under and do your thing.
If those 5,000 miles are ALL highway miles, you're not towing anything, the outside temperature is always above 32 degrees, and you don't live on a dirt road, then it's OK to go that long. Personally, would it really kill you to change it every 3000 miles?
Use whatever you want. 5W-20 is what Ford says, but my dad (Porsche mechanic for many moons - like 30 years or more...I quit counting) always tells me, they say a lower viscosity for fuel savings and power (thinner oil means less resistence). As far as synthetic, again...use what you want. The key is to change it regularly. That may mean 3000 for you or 4000, as long as you do it faithfully, you're good. I dare someone to show me an engine that went down in flames because someone changed their oil every 4000 instead of 3000 (under normal conditions). Don't let anyone scare you. I wouldn't use anything thicker than 10W-30 myself. AND...just because, I'm sticking with Motorcraft FL-820S filters since they have a valve that prevents the oil from draining out when the engine is off and I'll go with 5W-20 synthetic for that extra "I'm ****" protection
