Oil and filter change Change

I have a question, just changed my oil and filter after 2500 miles (brand new 4.6 engine) for a few seconds the engine made noises like lifter or internal engine noises then stopped after the oil pumped up, it was very disturbing to me, can any tell me if this is normal. I have changed oil many times with other vehicles, but never have heard this type of clatter.

Hi, how long did you let it drain? You could have let it drain too long and caused the oil galleys to dry up. Which stops that left over oil from lubricating all the parts on initial start up. Also, next time you change the oil, try filling the oil filter with oil before you put it back in. That will help it fill with oil faster!!!

Thanks for your reply, just hope it didn't do any damage, it made a loud racket. I completely drained oil and changed filter, the filter is installed horrizontally, maybe I could put a little oil in filter next time.At any rate it's still under warranty(2003 Mercury).

Next time you change the oil fill your new oil filter with oil before installing and see if that helps.

what oil are you using?

I agree with greenpus and bronco351 - fill your filter with oil next time. The sound you heard was just engine parts knocking around before the oil circulated and filled the gaps.

I will definately try to fill up filter next time, but most will run out when I install it horrizontly. I use Motorcraft 5W20 oil. Thanks for your replies.

I have always noticed a short duration clacking sound when I have changed my oil. As long as you don't rev the engine prior to the oil pressure building up, you'll minimize the resulting wear.

The fill filter or not debate has probably been going on since they invented spin-ons. In nearly 25 years of changing my own oil, I have never prefilled the oil filter, mostly because I think it's a PITA. I'm sure there are benefits to doing this, but I currently have one vehicle with over 200k, one with 185,000 and another with almost 100k, not to mention the various beaters and nice rigs I have owned over the years, and I have never had a major engine problem of any kind. Maybe I'm lucky, but I really doubt it.

My rule for longevity has always been use a quality oil (I like Pennzoil and have been using it forever, but there are many others), stick with it, and change it regularly.

Yeah, I agree. Try to prefill the filter. I have a horizontally mounted filter on my truck, and I've found that I can fill it almost full, and in one quick motion lift it up and screw it on. It takes a few tries to get it. I only drip about 2 drops doing this. I'm sure in your Mercury there is less room to do this, but it is doable. You dont use Fram filters by any chance do you? I ask because they can cause some noises anyway, and an empty filter after changing can aggrivate this.

you can fill the filter with oil and then put it in the freezer for a while to make the oil gell up so it doesnt run out when you install it.
