When I was younger, I had a 40 on my blazer and it was great. Fast forward to 2 years ago and I fired it up to move it for disassembly, my God... it was loud and droned horribly. I have no idea how I drove it every day everywhere I went for years.
But the factory cats take so much noise out of the exhaust I doubt it would be bad in one of our trucks.
I actually have stock front car and it's all straight pipe behind that over the axle in the factory exit. The cab noise is nonexistent and not too loud outside at cruise, but stomping the pedal gives it a little bite but not too much.
Got it welded in today...not much louder at idle than the stock model we cut out. It seems to breath better, and acts like it wants to be driven harder. Even at highway, it isn't loud....but, on aggressive take off, the sound is more throaty.
In time the stock cats will be replaced, but for now, I'm happy with the uograde.
Oh...I didnt pay attention to the side in center out I originally had, and bought a center in and out. Seeing the mistake, we bent up a new piece of pipe, bringing it up higher than stock, tucking it up high enough so that it cant easily be seen.
Wont use Flowmaster on anything. Having said that with stock cats the sound level won't be bad.
I put a Flowmaster 70, SISO, 3" behind stock cat on my '97 F350 w/460 about 110K miles back...fit perfectly, price was right, nice purposive V8 rumble...no snap-crackle-pop, no drone on the highway, no leaks, hasn't rusted out yet (midwest winter salt here). A few of my friends have Magnaflow...they're happy. Just curious, what don't you like about Flowmaster? TEHO, I say. I have no brand loyalty in exhaust systems.
The 40 series likes to drone around 2000 to 2500 rpms. Not terrible in a pickup, but Broncos get it worse. I have a 50DF on my 351 and it sounds a lot better imo.

I just really don't like their design. Also, I do not see how they master the flow of anything. Looks for like a maze of turbulence inside them. I think it has been shown that even turbo style mufflers flow better than they do. I prefer straight through design mufflers. Not to mention that they usually sound like a hollow tin can on older vintage vehicles. Just a trendy name is all it is in my opinion. Magnaflow is good. I have Dynomax Ultraflo and really like it.

To each their own...
I have a borla xr1 muffler on my bronco, and I really like it. Its loud, raw, and throaty, but it's approaching 200 bucks for one. The flowmasters (Nice quip about the name, got a good laugh at that, and I agree) I've had have been good, and that's the sound I wanted. Just like some people like glass packs, I don't care for them. Don't like the sound. But that's why theres ao many types of mufflers, because not everyone wants the same sound.
I had turbo mufflers on my 79 z28 and that wad the perfect classic sound for it in my opinion.
I had considered glass packs, and with the twin cat intact, probably should have gone that way. However, it does breathe better than before, has a nice growl in the dig, and is quiet at idle....I'm satisfied with the purchase
