I have been kicking around the idea of a cat back system and had it narrowed down to Magnaflow 16614 dual out the back, then I typed "Magnaflow F-150" on yahoo and did a video search. The video I watched made the exhaust sound pretty loud, and my wife was like no way. I have another baby on the way and she thinks it might be too much noise in the cab. So my question is if I got just a Magnaflow or Flowmaster muffler and kept the rest stock would I get a sound that is not loud, but also not stock. I just got the Edge tuner and plan on adding a CAI. Thanks all.
Blams, my vote will be for the Flowmaster... I only replaced the muffler with the 40 series and I am very impressed. It has a nice tone when first started, growls thru @ 2500 rpm, but does not drive me crazy with drone at highway speeds. And yes I too have a wife and 2 year old, and it passed their test. I do alot of hunting and didn't want to rattle the needles off of the pines.....gl
Check into the flowmaster d50 suv series. Its a little more money but the interior noise is better than the d40. That is the setup I am going with on my Excursion for the sound/ flow compromise we married guys go through.
my 3 yr old doesn't mind the Magnaflow 16614 setup at all. remember it's only loud while your accelerating. once your at speed, you'll barely hear it at all
good luck picking one, I understand the difficulties the wife can inflict.
yea, believe it or not, the Flowmaster 40 series are not loud at all. I dont understand some people when they say there is so much drone and that its obnoxiously loud compared to Magnaflows. I personally think its moderately toned and reasonable for an aftermarket high flow muffler.
P.S. My opinion may be biased since I went from Flowmaster 40 series to a custom STRAIGHT PIPE. Now that was loud!!! Kept it on for about 5 months, then I got tired of having my neighbors getting pissed at me whenever I would leave my house after midnight since it would wake up the whole neighborhood! So I went back to my Flowmasters and it sounded almost stock to me....Still, after about a month of having the muffler back on, it the tone is much more clear and crip and solid compared to the raspy and distorted sound of a straight pipe.
I don't know about my truck (no plans on modifying exhaust), but my Stang has the Flows 40 series with shorty headers and a catted X-pipe. I get a good drone on the highway at about 2000 rpm. The Mustang is a summer only car, but I wouldn't want those mufflers on a daily driven vehicle.

Most of your noise comes from your X pipe and your headers.....

Well, I suppose that's possible, but the stock headers with the stock H-Pipe (and H-Pipe gives a deeper growl) and stock mufflers could barely be heard. The first thing I did was throw a set of 40 series Flows on the stock headers and H-Pipe, and there was a drone right away, albeit not nearly as loud as when I added the rest of aftermarket exhaust.
These trucks interiors are so quiet. IF you put the magnaflow with dual outlet, it would sound good, not loud, but far from stock.
Inside you won't notice much of a difference other than if you are accelerating pretty fast, but outside is where the fun is.
I'd suggest the magnaflow(maybe not a cat back or complete system), just the muffler and get a muffler shop to do the pipe work for you with the magnaflow muffler.(usually alot cheaper, and just as good or better looks and quality).
OR if you just put the magnaflow in place of the stock muffler it wouldn't be to loud outside, but you'd notice a difference, and inside, you wouldn't hear much more of anything over stock.
My 1 year old doesn't mind my trucks exhaust. Straight pipes......
In the cab accelerating easy it isn't too loud and doesn't bother her at all, now it might bother her if I would accelerate fast, but I wouldn't do much of that with her in there anyway.
Just replaced my original muffler with a Magnaflow and am very happy with the results. Wanted a good deep V8 tone and flow thru muffler without getting loud. Had to please the wife, too. It was exactly what I wanted! Just a little boom at around 30 in 3rd gear but it dissapears quickly. Waiting for my next trip to see what, if any, gains in mpg might be realized. Very happy customer here. $194 total for local shop to order and put it on. Wanted it welded. Good luck on your choice. Jim
Interior sound was one of my concerns and after extensive research and listening to other people trucks equipped with every kind of exhaust known (I found that most people use Magnaflow or Flowmaster) however, I was sold on Gibson. All stainless, installs with factory style hangers, three different exit options (dual rear, dual out one side or split behind each rear tire (my choice).
One of my biggest hang ups was apperance... I wanted my new truck to look like it came with factory dual exhaust... Gibson delivered in my opinion. The polished stainless steel tips match the overall apperance of my Chrome Edition nicely. An excellent fit under the truck also.
I installed it in my basement in 2 hours (including removal of the old system).
The system has been on my truck since June and to this point I am very pleased with the performance and sound.
I didnt ask the wife what she thought. My truck and I drive it. The Mag isnt that loud, and she didnt even know I changed anything. But that AEM CAI is another story... BIG 4 BBL WOT sound when you romp it. Now I know why the stock plastic contraption that covered most of the front of the truck was as big and shaped the way it was. Noise control.

Yepper. I believe that entire piece is actually called an air silencer.
I do'nt know about the CAI but I just got a dual exhaust put on my 2006 F150 FX4. I had the local shop cut off the massive stock muffler and we placed a magnaflow, 40series, and 50 series SUV flowmaster muffler up there. I hated the sound of the magnaflow, not deep enough for me. The 40 sounded nice but a little too loud. After they installed the single inlet dual outlet 50 SUV I was extremely happy. Nice deep tone, rumbles nice at start up, drones out at highway, and when you hit that gas ... nice interior resonance but not too much. Stainless magnaflow 3 inch tips with rolled edges straight out the back look nice and clean.
