Need HELP deciding on which Flowmaster Muffler....

I have been looking and researching for what exhaust system to put on my 1986 Bronco for a while and I really need some help.

I have a Edelbrock Carbed 351W that I just finished rebuilding the top end of. It now needs an exhaust system, I am on a budget so keep that in mind.

I want to have a single flowmaster muffler with single in/dual out. I have narrowed down my choices of muffler to the following:

-50 series for Truck/SUV
-Super 40 Series
-Original 40 series
-Delta Flow 40 Series

I want a muffler that is going to turn a few heads when I hit the gas, I also want it to rumble a bit at idle. Interior noise is definatly a factor thou, I want to be able to carry out a conversation with passengers, and I also dont want to be forced to blast the radio all the way just to hear it. Another big thing I dont want is amy drowning sounds, they give me headachs and that is not something I want. I want deep, powerfull, loud sounds.

I am kind of leaning towards the first two on that list, but I cant decide, so many people say different things. Some people say the 50 truck/suv series is too quiet, others say its perfect. Many people say that the 40 series is too loud, but then again some people say that its not loud enough. The reason I am leaning towards the Super 40 over the Original is because on Flowmasters website they say that it has "Less Interior sound and Deeper Exterior Sound". And I have heard that the 50 SUV/Truck Series also sounds great (but it may be too quiet, not sure)......As you can see I just need some advice.

But I have listened to the sound clips on Flowmasters website of these mufflers countless times and just CANT make a descission. So I really need some opinions.

I will be taking off both catalytic converters (I have removed all the other emissions stuff, ie smog pump etc....and I passed emissions just fine, and they didnt do a check for the cats so I figure I might as well get rid of them).

For the pipes I am thinking I will have a y-pipe (like the stock that is on there now) except I will have the shop replace it with a 3" y pipe, continuing with the 3" pipe unitil the muffler which will change to dual 2.5" exiting the muffler, then continue that all the way straight out the back with chorme tips. I am not positive on the size, so if you have any comments on it, please tell me.

Thanks,

Nick~

i would say go with the original 40, or super 40. im not sure what the difference is, but i believe they are similar. my buddy has duals with 2 40 originals on his 94 f-150 with no cats and it sounds awesome!...not the loud in the cab either. i have the 40 original si/do with the first cat and it sounds nice...but not quite loud enuf IMO.

hope that helps some...

Check with a shop and see if they will slip one on and let you hear it, if you don't like it try the other, we have a shop here that actually has a stock of used muffs and will do that IF you are gonna buy the system. And if you run with the back window open on the bronco I'd kinda rethink putting them straight out the back, even in general because if there is any leaks in the seals the exaust will come right in.

i've got a 2001 5.4l and installed a 50 series suv. single in, single out. everything else stock. it sounds pretty good going through the gears. at 65 you can hear it in the cab (drone?). at idle it is very quiet but has a rumble.

personally, i like it. i haul some clients around for my job so it's just about right. i've only had one person notice it wasn't stock.

very true, but beware that the sound @ 2000 rpm in neutral will be VASTLY different from 2000 rpm at load.

That is definitly true, I guess it does make it kinda tough, the worst thing is an exaust system that is louder inside then out too.

the original 40 series is the original two chamber flowmaster.it is what made that ever so popular "flowmaster sound".keep in mind that the tailpipe has a substancial amount to do with overall tone and volume.my experience has been that any flowmaster is going to drone inside the cab(i cant hear my exhaust over the tires though).a flowmaster with no tailpipe will sound completely different from one with 4 foot tailpipes.my 2 cents after reading your post would be this.....2.5 inch delta flow 40 series, two 2.5 inch tailpipes with 3 inch tips.you are still going to get quite a bit of noise in the cab,buy you some of that insulating paint stuff and coat the underside of the body(dont use rubberized undercoating....the flowmaster will melt it)
