03 7.3 p1211 icp above/below desired

Hi all,

03 7.3 140k ish f550 rwd. Rough running at idle and doesnt seem to be down on power, except for at times. While watching icp and ipr at idle and when it's down on power, nothing is showing out of spec. Test drove with bobcat and trailer on the truck and ICP was holding around 2400 psi.

KOEO:
EBP 14.8 and 1v
ICP .32v and 53.9 psi (hot)
IPR 15%
MAP 14.1 psi

KOER at idle
EBP 14.8 and 1.03v
ICP .88v and 483.7 psi
IPR 8%
MAP 14.0

Performed cylinder contribution test and get faults for cylinders 3 and 8. When I run a buzz test all injectors sound normal, but get an idm fault and cyl 5 high/low open. TRUCK HAS A SWAMPS IDM. I swapped idms with known good. The p1298 was no longer present, but the high/low open fault moved to cylinder 3. Have not checked fuel pressure yet. Just received the adapter and will he working on that after I post. Any idea on where I should be looking ?

did you have low fuel pressure? I ordered the wrong fitting for my gauge. I have to go makeshift some things at home depot to make it work so I haven't checked yet.

The fuel bowl threads are -4 ORB. Only place local I could find that was a hydraulic shop but riff raff and diesel oRings sell them.

Yes my fuel pressure was/is 30 psi at WOT and 50 PSI at idle.

Quick update. Fuel pressure at idle is 67psi and drops to 60-62psi at WOT.

Cylinders 3 and 8 frequently show up together from what I understand. You will have good fuel pressure going into the rails, but those 2 cylinders will not get it all due to the firing order. Do you have a regulated return system?

i suppose you can cross low low fuel pressure off your list

dont know that it matters but why is ypur pressure so high ? Spec is 51 +/- 4 psi

So what’s next ? New IPR Orings and then on to injector cups ?

how does your radiator overflow tank look ? Oily film on the inside is a good sign your cups are leaking into the coolant. The plastic should be white but yellows over time, if it has black residue....there a sign.

I'm not sure. Could have been the gauge I guess. And i tested it at the fuel bowl test port.

everything on the truck is stock except for the IDM from swamps that was installed when I bought the truck.

One of the Probable causes the factory service manual list is a short in the IRP wiring circuit.

i was going through my records and I noticed a new IPR pig tail was installed a few years back when the dealer did an injector.
since Ihad it torn apart doing Turbo pedestal Orings, rebuilding the fuel pressure regulator and new IPR Orings I figured I’d take yank the harness and go through it since all the tape is unraveling ....

looks like I found at least one of my issues.

worst part is the shop used black tape so the wires were all goopy. Will solder a new with a pig tail, convoluted loom and factory cloth tape ( Tesa Cloth Loom tape ) to return it to factory fresh.

Everybody skipped right over this. Passenger side UVCH needs attention. Good links in my signature.

Just a quick update. I changed the oil and threw in hot shots stictation eliminator. Stuff works well in the 6.0s so I figured, why not. Well fired then truck up and it was still loping at idle. 20mins go by and the idle returned to normal. I let it sit over night and fired it up the next morning and idle was smooth. Took it for a test drive and power was there, but a lot of black smoke in 3rd and 4th (truck is a manual). After about 50 miles or so the smoke came and went. But I noticed, cruising in 5th around 2k rpms, the turbo would spool with no further input from the pedal and I would pick up speed.

I reran injector buzz test and no longer get any injector faults. Cylinder contribution shows no faults. So I'm thinking either a mechanically failing injector or some things going on with the waste gate on the turbo. Thoughts?
