Fuel Shim

So i shimmed the regulator with a BB and now my fuel pressure is at 80psi at idle. Is it safe to keep the fuel pressure this high or should i shim it down to 75?

A few trucks run good at 80, but not many. Seems that for most, going over 75 psi diminishes the returns a bit. Might want to play with the pressure a bit to find the sweet spot.

If anything, it will probably shorten the pump's life a bit. The main problem that would be best eliminated is the small check-valves on the inlets to the cylinder head's fuel rails, they are almost too small to get a paper clip through them. I run my fuel pressure at 72ish psi at idle, and i can turn it down or up with my regulator. It gets really quiet below 20psi, and over 75 psi it seems to make the engine louder, more injector clackle.

Correction, it at about 76 psi now. From where i was standing and my truck being so tall it looked like 79~80ish but after i went for a test and i looked at it it was showing 76 at idle and now it only drops to about 61 with the pedal to the floor.

I'm new to this, but how would you adjust your pressure from 80 down to 70-75 if you used a BB to get it to 80. Forgive me if there is an obvious answer but I haven't done this mod yet, and I'm thinking about it. Thanks.

I'm currently running 69-70psi and its perfect. Different trucks will run better at different psi. The shim size will also depend on the condition of your fuel pump and what your base-line psi is. In John311t's case he will have to find a smaller shim, a smaller size BB or a filed down wall plate screw. dieselinnovations.com has a great kit with shims.

Thanks, different size bb was all I could think of but didn't know of different size bb's. I just wasn't sure if there was a different way of "fine tuning" them once a bb/screw was installed. I'm sure once I get it in pieces and have it in my hand it will make a lot more sense. Thanks again.

Results may vary, but I exprienced a slight noise reduction in the motor, smoother idle and a little better throttle reponse. But, you have to be careful because you could push a weak fuel pump over the edge by shimming. I did!!

Your sitting on it, under the driverside on the inside of the frame rail. OEM will run about 250 or so.

The interesting thing about replacing the fuel pump is, you may not need the shim kit. When I had my fuel pump replaced, it read 65psi. Since I already had the kit, I experimented a little. 65-75psi are the readings I've seen most here on the forum after shimming.

What do I measure the fuel pressure with? And where do I get instructions for this mod?
